The $7,500 Leica SL Camera Does 120fps in HD or 30fps in 4k with 10-bit Uncompressed 4:2:2 Out

Leica makes the leap into mirrorless HDSLR territory with the Leica SL 4K cam.

Meant for stills and video, the full-frame Leica SL crops to APS-C Super 35mm when shooting 4K. Reaching up to roughly 25,000 ISO and ability to shoot on Leica LOG, the Leica SL represents the company's foray into cinematic applications.

  • 24fps @ 4K DCI
  • 30fps @ 4K Quad HD
  • 120fps @ HD
  • Internally records 8-bit .mov or .mp4 with h.264 compression
  • Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 out
  • Leica L mount
  • HD uses whole sensor / 4K crops to APS-C
  • ISO goes up to 25,000
  • Leica LOG picture profile

Well I'm happy Leica have taken video on, because nobody handles color as well except arri,
but i cant help but think:

As if they don't have the tech to scale the sensor to 1080p internally without binning.

and why the #$*& are they capping the shot length at 30min still on new cameras?
it can't really be a tax loophole in the EU. Somebody over there tell them cameras do both now.

is there any 4k internally? or just via external recorders? s35 is music to my ears, nofilmsch. you just have aps-c listed in the specs.

I'm sure it handles like a dream, they've always known where the buttons should go.
Excited to see the footage.

Dear Camera Makers:
Say Global Shutter, Internal stablization, 10bit internal recording (even just 2min!) with an efficient codec and you'll have us all lined up on release day with Cfast cards at the ready.

Leica's color science with the SL is hitting the mark and quite exceptional. The only issue with it regarding video is anything over ISO 800 is completely unusable. It turns to mush with overzealous noise reduction. Search the web and you'll see examples of this. Once they fix this it'll be a real contender with it's 10-bit 4:2:2 output. Still waiting to see the audio cable interface for mics and headphones. On the photo side even exposures at ISO 25,000 or 50,000 from the examples I've seen are quite usable. If they can make video look as good at these high ISOs it would be fantastic.
