The 2023 Golden Globes Nominations Ignored Women Directors... Again
The Golden Globes 2023 nominations just came out. See the list here.
The Golden Globes nominees have been released, and not a single woman was nominated for the best director category—again.
Despite critically acclaimed films Women Talking directed by Sarah Polley, The Woman King directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Till directed by Chinonye Chukwu being released in 2022, the Golden Globes filled the 10 film categories in Best Director, Best Picture in Drama, and Best Picture in Comedy will all-male filmmakers.
Polley is the only woman nominated for Women Talking for the screenplay category.

While this news is shocking to reading in 2022, the Gloden Globes has a history of snubbing women in the top categories. In the award show’s history, nine women have been nominated for directing, with three winners, including Barbra Streisand for Yentl, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, and Jane Campion for The Power of the Dog, in its 80-year history.
The Globes and the Academy have come under fire in the past for their lack of recognition and diversity among their nominees. Natalie Portman made a point of referring to the “all-male nominees” during her presentation at the 2018 Golden Globes, while Greta Gerwig’s beloved Lady Birddid not get a single nod that year. In 2021, many creators, critics, and fans of I May Destroy You were upset that the series did not receive a single nomination while Emily in Paris was widely recognized, generating a theory that the Globes has a sordid history of overlooking films, shows, and performances by people of color.
For most of cinema, many voices have been drowned out. While underrepresented voices, including women’s, were still making great movies, the industry failed to acknowledge these films. The fact that they are still ignoring great films made by women is a sign of the Golden Globes’ and Acamdey’s lack of awareness and flexibility to change and represent modern cinema culture.
HFPA president Helen Hoehne said this year’s films and television shows were “voted on by a majority of women and those who self-identify as ethnically diverse, representing 62 countries around the world.” This change in diversity in the HFPA’s membership, as well as adding 103 voters who are not members to the voting pool, comes after the last year’s report of the HFPA having no Black members in its group of 87 members.
The Globes were once seen as the marker of award season, but the steady stream of scandals, celebrity defections, and lack of representation within its voting pool has tarnished the glory that was once bestowed on the award ceremony.
Why in a time when the Globes could have easily nominated a well-deserving female-directed film for best picture or director did they fail to do so? The three films I mentioned are some of the most critically acclaimed films of 2022, yet they will go unrecognized at the Globes and most likely at the Academy Awards.
It’s a good year for indie films and newcomers, but it is a hard win to celebrate while snubs continue to happen against underrepresented voices in filmmaking.
