NBC Cancels the 2022 Golden Globes Amidst HFPA Backlash

The HFPA has come under fire, and the backlash is real.

Amidst calls for diversity and inclusion, NBC has decided to cancel the 2022 Golden Globes.

NBC released a statement this morning, saying, “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The decision was made today as WarnerMedia, Netflix, and Amazon all promised to boycott the HFPA over continued backlash against the organization's lack of diversity

The HFPA announced potential reforms to the organization last week, but provided no timeline for substantial changes beyond admitting 20 new members this year “with a specific focus on recruiting Black members and building an environment to allow for their success."

More to come soon.

...for a good reason.

"...a specific focus on recruiting Black members". So, they're just going to focus on hiring more black people? What about Latinos? We are almost twice the population as African Americans and yet we are being completely ignored by this "equity" fad. What about Asians? What about Native Americans? What about Arabs? Etc...I'm happy for the gains that black people are experiencing but it seems that they are the only minority that is being included (in the news media, in movies, in TV shows, in commercials...and now even in the HFPA). It's insulting to other minorities how we're being ghosted in all of this and it's really a new form of racism.

While I do agree with you sentiments that there has been and increase of calling out on diversity for black people vs other ethnicities. There are members of the HFPA that are of various ethnicities (i.e Asian & Middle-East, I am unsure about Latino & Native American.) This was stated in an LA Times article that NFS had linked to in a previous posting. So in regards to this issue specifically, the problem is diversity among black members. Again, I do agree that we as a society need to work on being inclusive of all ethnicities, and races. I just do not think that applies to this specific situation. However, I could be wrong.
