Camera Rumors: High Resolution Canon EOS R Coming in 2019

Canon High Resolution EOS R Rumor
Here’s what we’ve heard about a new high resolution Canon EOS R with a 50 megapixel sensor.

Who doesn’t love some good camera gossip? Camera rumors come and go throughout the year, but have been heating up recently with NAB and Photokina both around the corner.

In addition to rumors of a Canon C300 capable of 8K (read the full story here), as well as a less-substantive dream build-out for a Panasonic L-Mount Cinema Camera (read here), Canon Watch has information about a new “high resolution Canon EOS R” possibly being announced here early in 2019.

Bonus Camera Rumors: Sony is reportedly set to announce new sensors of its own which can offer 8K video at 60 fps (read the full story here).

A High Resolution Canon EOS R

While Canon’s initial EOS R release has not enjoyed the best fanfare on its release (here’s one sample of how it stacks up with other digital mirrorless cameras at its price range). Canon appears to be set on making a run on the market and doubling down on mirrorless (even rumoredly ditching the EOS 5Ds to do so).

What we do know from reports is that this new high resolution Canon EOS R should have a sensor around 50 MP (down from earlier reports of Canon pushing for 75 MP). And that this new high resolution EOS R could be "announced during Q1 2019, before Photokina 2019" (via Canon Watch.)

The Canon EOS R

Canon EOS R Rumor

For those interested, the Canon EOS R is still alive though. The biggest indicator of the camera’s ultimate success or failure may be decided throughout this holiday market and heading into 2019. If the camera sells and has enough life to get some much needed firmware updates (or a stronger mk II), it might end up alright. Or, it might get lost in the tussle with the strong offerings from Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Blackmagic.

Here are the current Canon EOS R specs:

  • 30.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor

  • UHD 4K30 Video

  • C-Log & 10-Bit HDMI Out

  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF

  • 3.15" 2.1m-Dot Swivel Touchscreen LCD

  • SD UHS-II Card Slot

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

  • Price: $2,299.00

What are your thoughts on a new “high resolution Canon EOS R” and if you’d be interested in such a camera?

Your Comment

Canon needs to bring their cameras up to 2018. I am a canon shooter personally and am frustrated at how their specs for price do not add up. The c300 Mark II cant even shoot slow motion without cropping the sensor, and when you use the slow motion mode you lose all your assist functionality. I am not expecting anything revolutionary from this camera, but who knows maybe Canon will surprise me.

In the year 2025 canon cameras will shoot at full frame 8k but they will crop the senor to 1080p 60 and charge $5000 for it.

If canons furture line is anything like it’s recent past, they will release something that’s like cake, but you don’t get to eat it.
Ilke eos r with 720p for high frame rates, and like the crop factor.

I've been a Canon user for over 2 decades. I have a pretty substative collection of Canon glass and SLR's. I bought the EOS R as my first venture into digital VF's. The programmability of the EOS R is astounding, but, I'm disappointed in the resolution. tests have shown all the other current set of DSLR's to be better. It would be a slap in the face, once more, using Canon customers as beta testers if Canon abandoned the first release of the EOS R.
