Alejandro Jodorowsky Thinks COVID-19 Can Change Cinema (for the Better)
Alejandro Jodorowsky has a lot of crazy ideas...but this isn't one of them.
Alejandro Jodorowsky is 91 years old...and he's still dreaming. The mind behind movies like El Topo and The Holy Mountain has not settled on old age but continued to push its limits. In a recent interview with Indiewire, Jodorowsky talked about where his life is headed now.
He spoke about his new movie, Psychomagic, a Healing Art which covers the mystic way about healthcare, in a typical Jodorowsky fashion.
Being 91, Jodorowsky has seen it all. But we are living in unprecedented times now that we're in the middle of a pandemic. When asked about going to the movies after this outbreak, Jodorowsky has an interesting quote.
"We need to adapt ourselves to a new way of feeling life, and that is interesting. Art will change. The goal of movies is to make business. Now, people are waiting for something more, in order to have the joy of life. We cannot continue to see Supermans and violence. We’ll need to discover how beautiful the human being is, so beautiful it is to be alive."
He goes on to say, "My life cannot change because I am 91 years old. I try to live as much as I can, but I am a little in the end. I am not thinking of the benefit of my work now, or glory, power, money. I am thinking in the big, big felicity to be doing art and life, and also making human contact."
While this isn't an optimistic end to the quote, I think we should see it as a challenge for all of us who will move on from this period of time to make things. Art is about challenging yourself, and there is nothing more challenging than what we're facing now.
So use these long days to dream.
