The Safdie Brothers have been making movies that profile New York City and the people within it for the last several years, but Good Time felt like it was their time to shine in the more mainstream audience. We spoke to them at length about that release at the time

Now, they're back with a movie called Uncut Gems, which is already getting Oscar buzz for its star, Adam Sandler.

Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a man involved in a risky bet that could land him a massive fortune but also puts himself and his family in danger. The film also stars Kevin Garnett and Idina Menzel.

Are the Safdie's Auteurs

If you're asking me? I'm saying "Yes."

The Safdies definitely have a distinct look and style that permeates their films. They also are usually chasing the gritty side of something beautiful. And I love how they use New York as a setting and a character in all their films.

While I'm not a fan of the theory in general, the Safdies are creating must-see films that truly transcend typically storytelling into something much more visceral. They also make the most of their cast and get amazing performances.

What do you think?

Are the Safdie brothers auteurs?

Uncut Gems is set for a December 13 release date.
