Panasonic has released a slew of firmware updates for the LUMIX S series cameras, and with the announcement came the addition of the S5 receiving external RAW recording. In tow, Atomos has unveiled that it will support ProRes RAW with its Ninja V recorder allowing shooters to capture 5.9K, 4K, and anamorphic 3.5K video.

The firmware from Atomos will support the following formats:

  • 5.9K up to 30p
  • 4K up to 60p
  • 3.5K Anamorphic (4:3) up to 50p

What's great about the Panasonic LUMIX cameras is the ability to shoot with anamorphic lenses.

Anamorphic offers a unique look for filmmakers as the characteristics of these lenses, including the oval bokeh, flares, streaks, and chromatic aberrations, are embraced rather than shied away from.

Pairing it with a RAW workflow, in this case ProRes RAW, gives filmmakers an enormous amount of latitude to adjust the look, where you can extend the brightness or shadow detail for HDR workflows. Both ProRes RAW and the higher-bandwidth, less-compressed ProRes RAW HQ will be supported by the S5, as they are on other LUMIX cameras like the S1H.

To unlock the feature, you will need to download the free Atomos Ninja V firmware as well as the latest Panasonic LUMIX S5 firmware starting November 24th.
