The arc of the original characters in the Avengers, from the first team-up movie all the way to Endgame, was fantastic. It was quite literally the best a huge blockbuster could do, and it left everyone feeling so satisfied...especially Captain America.

That's right, no one had a happier ending than Steve Rogers. The guy got his best friend back and saw him turn into a hero, saved the world and all his other friends, and then was able to go back in time to settle down with his sweetheart.

It was a journey that felt so heartfelt and so earned...so why are the people at Marvel ruining that now by bringing him back for Avengers: Doomsday?

Avengers: Doomsday Teaser

When we woke up this morning and heard there was going to be a teaser for Avengers: Doomsday, we were all excited in the office. But as we crowded around laptops to watch, there was a bit of a collective gasp.

Steve Rogers was back in uniform...but at what cost?

The Doomsday teaser shows us a man living his best life with a wife and a baby, but insinuates he will be ripped out of paradise to fight an unseen villain a year from now.

Look, the movie is called Doomsday...why not show him?

He's the real draw!

Captain America retired in the best way possible. He has a family he loves and was getting to make up for lost time with Peggy Carter.

The idea of another movie hinging on bringing him back means they're either out of ideas at Marvel or think this is a way to restore these huge superhero movies to massive box office dominance... which is fine. But that doesn't make anyone excited to see the movie.

The thing is.... seeing Rogers felt like it cheapened his perfect ending. It retcons a happy finish in the series and turns it a little sour.

They want to sell tickets, so they brought back their biggest star... which we know they did with Downey. But at least Downey is doing it, playing a theoretically new character.

This felt sad and a little washed. Let Steve Rogers rest in peace.

We've seen Marvel in another phase introduce us to many new characters and ideas. Bringing back someone old feels like completely pressing the brakes on any new storylines and hoping they can pay off audience nostalgia for... six years ago?

If you want to expand your brand and its characters, let them star in movies.

We'll have to wait and see the movie to decide if any of that's true, but this teaser casually alludes to wrecking the life of a peaceful servant, which is a bummer.

And even if Cap comes back after it all, where he left off, it messes with a character arc that had already been completed in a beautiful way.
