As promised with a teaser the other week, Canon has a new “V” camera to debut. The mystery has been revealed: the company has unveiled its new Canon EOS R6 V, a follow-up to its popular R6 mirrorless camera that has always had a nice video-tint.

The new Canon EOS R6 V takes things up a notch, though, as it is set to feature a 32.5MP full-frame sensor and a ton of advanced features, all tailored for high-end video capture.

The biggest specs to know off the bat are the ability to record 7K RAW video, an impressive dynamic range, and an active cooling system, which should be quite enticing for working videographers and ambitious video content creators.

The New Canon EOS R6 V

For filmmakers and video content creators, this is a great day. Not only do we get this new Canon camera, but we also get a new Sony and new lenses for each. It’s hard to say which introduction would be most impactful, but a new R6 is exciting news, as the previous models were well-tailored for working video pros.

The Canon R6 V doubles down on video content, built around a 32.5MP full-frame CMOS sensor and a powerful DIGIC X image processor, which promise exceptionally sharp, low-noise image capture in a wide variety of high-quality video formats.

With 7K raw video recording at the sensor’s massive 6960 x 4640 resolution, as well as 7K oversampling for 4K video with superior detail and color reproduction, the R6 V should be quite effective for shooting in pretty much any lighting situation you encounter.

The R6 V can also provide 15+ stops of dynamic range recording in Canon Log 2, and its native ISO range of 100 to 64,000 is extendable to 50 to 102,400.

7K30 Open Gate RAW

As mentioned above, the headline for many might be the R6 V's top recording specs, and, man, these are impressive for a camera at its price point. The EOS R6 V can record in internal 7K30 open-gate RAW and 7K60 RAW Light, which can obviously deliver deep 12-bit color and razor-sharp detail.

Here are some of the camera’s top video recording options:

  • 6960 x 4640 (3:2) open gate RAW recording up to 29.97 fps
  • 6960 x 3672 (17:9) DCI RAW Light recording up to 59.94 fps
  • 4096 x 2160 (17:9) and 3840 x 2160 (16:9) oversampled video up to 59.94 fps
  • 4096 x 2160 (17:9) and 3840 x 2160 (16:9) video up to 120 fps
  • 2048 x 1080 (17:9) and 1920 x 1080 (16:9) video up to 180 fps with 1.13x crop
  • 12-bit RAW, 10-bit XF-HEVC S/H.265, and 8/10-bit XF-AVC S/H.264 formats

Shooters can also use custom picture profiles, which can be activated via the dedicated color button, providing direct access to Canon Log 2, Canon Log 3, HLG, PQ, Canon 709, BT.709, and 14 additional user-assignable profiles.
