Wait, What? Fujifilm is Releasing a Hybrid Instant Camera That Can Shoot Video For Some Reason
A look at the just-announced Fujifilm “instax mini Evo Cinema”, a new model in the company’s instax hybrid instant camera series that will be able to shoot video.

Fujifilm instax Evo Cinema
Yes, you read that correctly. Fujifilm has just announced the launch of a new mini Evo Cinema camera, a hybrid instant camera that allows users to take pictures and shoot video footage.
What type of video footage are we talking about here? Well, we’re glad you asked, because it’s not what you think. (Or maybe you figured it out on your own, who knows!)
The “instax mini Evo Cinema”, also dubbed the “mini Evo Cinema”, is a new model of the company's popular instax hybrid instant camera “Evo series” that is taking its content a step further by allowing shooters to create QR code-shareable video clips.
Here’s what you need to know.
Fujifilm’s New mini Evo Cinema Camera
So, all incredulous joking aside, this isn’t a video camera for working video content professionals. It’s, of course, more of a fun gimmick for enjoyment. It makes sense, too, as the instax Evo series has never been about high-end photography either. It’s all just for fun.
Still, this is a pretty unique new camera for Fujifilm that is trying something new. Only time will tell if it catches on at all or not, but it’s fun to check out at the very least. Basically, this mini Evo Cinema camera will be able to capture both still images and videos.
The camera will then be able to convert any captured video data into a QR code and create an instax print together with a still image cut out from the video, allowing users to “hand over a video”.
Thus, by turning their videos into instax prints, users will not only be able to preserve memorable moments spent with loved ones in tangible form, but they can also now easily revisit the video anytime via the QR code.
Travel Through Different Eras
The other most notable feature of this mini Evo Cinema is the camera’s “Eras Dial,” which sounds ike a Taylor Swift concept, but it is also quite fun—if not also very gimmicky. With this new feature, users will be able to experience effects inspired by different eras.
There will be 10 “Eras Dial” effects available, including “1960” inspired by 8mm film cameras. Fujifilm shares that each effect will have 10 adjustable levels, offering a total of 100 possible expressions. These effects are designed to let users try to capture the unique flavor of each era, which are—of course—shared via these QR code clips.
The mini Evo Cinema will also feature a vertical grip design inspired by Fujifilm’s “FUJICA Single-8”, an 8mm camera introduced in 1965, that looks to be quite well-crafted and capable of handling this analog operation.
Price and Availability
Again, this isn’t a serious product for working photo or video professionals by any means. But if you’re looking for something fun to try out in the future, this might be worth an investment.
That being said, we don’t have any details yet as to the price or availability—although with it releasing in Japan soon, we’ll likely get more info here soon, so stay tuned.
