How Are Artists Confronting and Using AI?
The world is advancing more rapidly than expected. How are artists deal with it?
I have been covering artificial intelligence here for the past few months, and it feels like things have moved at such a pace that even typing this feels like being a step behind. As a writer, I have been worried that AI might be used to take away jobs.
But I can't imagine what's going on with artists right now.
The rapid advancement of machine learning has deeply impacted the world of art and artists. Check out this video from The Museum of Modern Art and let's talk after the jump.
How Are Artists Confronting and Using AI?
So, what can an artist do in this new landscape?
Kate Crawford, professor, artist, and author of Atlas of AI says, “I think we are at a crucial inflection point right now. I've been calling it the generative turn. It's a moment where what we previously understood as how everything from illustration to film directing to publishing works is all about to change very rapidly.”
All art is changing. I'm hoping we're going to value things that come from humans since creative endeavors take actual talent and not algorithmic learning. But the data AI is mining was mostly created by humans, too, so as it mimics us, that gap is closing faster than anticipated.
AI is a tool. People can use it or not.
I am conflicted when it comes to how artists should be using it. I'd love to see them mix mediums or find newer directions for how their art can go. But I also don't want it to be something we take for granted. It's an interesting line. The best thing you can do is talk to more artists, support their work, and ask them how they feel about it.

Summing Up How Are Artists Confronting and Using AI
Machine learning is becoming an increasingly relevant tool in the toolkit of contemporary artists – even if it's a tool they choose to ignore to challenge themselves further. Through their innovative and experimental approaches, artists are harnessing the power of machine learning to create groundbreaking artworks that raise important questions about the role of technology in society, challenge our perceptions of creativity, and invite us to reflect on the ethical implications of AI.
As the relationship between art and machine learning continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more exciting and thought-provoking artworks that push the boundaries of artistic expression and contribute to the ongoing discourse on the intersection of technology and creativity.
