Having to change an actor midway through filming is something that I wouldn’t wish even on my arch-rival. Casting a new face after shooting a part of the film is a production nightmare, especially because chances are it will rip your budget apart like the newborn xenomorph ripped open Kane’s chest in Alien.

Recasting a role midway through filming also means redoing much of the filming and pre-production. In addition to money, it can also cost you your narrative in the worst-case scenario.

But what’s with all the pessimism? Replacing an actor midway during filming is not always the worst thing, and has been done more times than you can imagine.

I like to believe that the different roles any actor plays in a lifetime are pre-destined; every role chooses its actor like the wand chooses its master. It doesn’t all come down to talent or availability. Everything has to do with destiny.

In this article, let’s look at some of the iconic roles that were recast midway through the shoot. You can decide whether it was a boon or a bane!

13 Roles That Were Recast Midway Through Filming

1. Charlie Harper: Charlie Sheen Was Replaced by Ashton Kutcher

Two and a Half Men

The reigning sitcom of the early 2000s, Two and a Half Men, starring Charlie Sheen, was a television hit for more than a decade. Sheen was the undisputed TV star playing the hedonistic jingle writer—until there was a major fallout with the producers.

Rumors have it that Sheen was fired after he was spiteful of the team in an interview, and the clash didn’t end there. If you have seen the TV series finale, tell me: is it me, or does Charlie's comically catastrophic return and death no longer feel like a cinematic joke?

Kutcher may be a good actor, but he is no Sheen when it comes to humor. Honestly, after Sheen is replaced, the show dies a slow death.

2. Aragorn: Stuart Townsend Was Replaced by Viggo Mortensen

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Getting replaced in a legendary role on creative grounds is the worst feeling. Stuart Townsend had two months of training and was replaced in the role of Aragorn, the future king of Gondor, after a couple of days of filming, because Peter Jackson quickly realized that he looked too young for the role. Ultimately, Viggo Mortensen replaced him.

3. Marty McFly: Eric Stoltz Was Replaced by Michael J. Fox

Back to the Future (1985)

We cannot imagine Back to the Future without Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, but not many know that the original Marty was Eric Stoltz.

Reportedly, director Robert Zemeckis shot with him for several weeks and quickly realized that, although he is an amazing actor, he just wasn't the Marty they had envisioned, especially because he wasn’t hitting the humor notes quite right.

Eventually, he was replaced by Fox. Per Caseen Gaines’ book, We Don’t Need Roads: The Making of the Back to the Future Trilogy, the crew kept filming until they could get their new man on board. Stoltz had no idea that he was going to be replaced. Slightly heartless or professional diplomacy?

That being said, once Fox was officially onboarded as the lead of Back to the Future, Zemeckis took it upon himself to personally break the news to Stoltz, who was naturally devastated.

4. John Paul Getty: Kevin Spacey Was Replaced by Christopher Plummer

All the Money in the World

Kevin Spacey had almost completed shooting for All the Money in the World when he was accused of sexual misconduct. To avoid controversy, the makers replaced him with Christopher Plummer, which disrupted their shooting schedule and budget.

5. Christof: Dennis Hopper Was Replaced by Ed Harris

The Truman Show

No offense to Hopper, but getting replaced in a role for not being able to remember the lines is pretty lame!

Harris delivers a deeply nuanced and memorable supporting performance as Christof, the creator and director of the fictional Truman Show. He plays Christof not as a straightforward villain but as a man consumed by a god complex, who blindly believes that he’s created wonder. His performance makes control look both scary and utopic.

6. Lenina Huxley: Lori Petty Was Replaced by Sandra Bullock

Demolition Man

Actors being fired from projects because of creative and professional conflicts with co-actors is quite common. Reportedly, Lori Petty was fired from Demolition Man after she and Sylvester Stallone had constant rifts while working together.

7. Dwayne Hicks: James Remar Was Replaced by Michael Biehn

Aliens

It was about one month into the filming of Aliens when James Remar, the original actor for Dwayne Hicks, was arrested for illegal drug possession after police raided his apartment.

Michael Biehn was then recast as Hicks.

8. Geralt of Rivia: Henry Cavill Was Replaced by Liam Hemsworth

Rumors have it that Henry Cavill dropped out of the ongoing Netflix series The Witcher after three seasons due to significant creative differences. According to official statements, Cavill wanted to pursue other roles and films.

9. Zeus: Lance Reddick Was Replaced by Courtney B. Vance

An actor’s death is already heartbreaking. On top of that, having to replace them in an ongoing show or film is painful, too. But the show must go on.

After Lance Reddick died in 2023, starring in the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians as Zeus, he was replaced by Courtney B. Vance in the second season.

10. Zee: Aaliyah Was Replaced by Nona Gaye

The Matrix Reloaded

Another painful recast is that of Aaliyah’s in The Matrix Reloaded. Shortly after filming a few parts of the movie, Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001. The studio held auditions to replace her, and finally, Nona Gaye was cast as Zee.

11. Samantha: Samantha Morton Was Replaced by Scarlett Johansson

Her

After Spike Jonze was done shooting Her, he realized that Morton’s voice wasn’t doing enough justice to the AI’s personality. In the end, Scarlett Johansson became the voice of Samantha.

12. Carol Willick: Anita Barone Was Replaced by Jane Sibbett

Friends

Anita Barone and Jane Sibbett definitely do not look identical. However, it’s wild how people often miss out this recast even after multiple rewatches.

Barone left Friends because she expected a more prominent role as Ross’ ex-wife in the sitcom and was replaced by Sibbett, who became iconic as Carol despite her limited screen time.

13. Captain Willard: Harvey Keitel Was Replaced by Martin Sheen

Apocalypse Now

We’re all aware of the chaotic production of Apocalypse Now. Along with production nightmares, the movie also navigated significant recasting, especially since they had to replace their lead actor midway through filming.

Reportedly, Harvey Keitel, the original choice for Army Captain Benjamin Willard, was not happy filming in a real jungle. Eventually, Martin Sheen replaced him.

Which of these roles do you think was rightly recast?
