Ancient myths through a modern lens.

Some of the greatest writing in the history of the world has preceded us.
Many ancient mythologies are considered timeless classics for their themes of heroism, sacrifice, and poignant portrayals of the human condition. These themes resonate deeply with audiences across cultures, even today.
We often notice similarities between mythologies and modern-day cinema. Whether intended or purely coincidental, these parallels are drawn simply because of the profound impact these films have had on us and their inherent relatedness to ancient texts.
With that in mind, let’s explore some of the most compelling modern films that reinvent classic mythologies, by design or by chance!
9 Modern Films That Reimagine Classic Mythologies
Here are 9 films that brought back classic mythologies in thrilling ways.
1. The Lion King (1994)
What I consider one of the greatest stories ever told, The Lion King, is a fascinating example of a film that bears a striking resemblance to both ancient Egyptian texts and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The popular Disney film follows Simba, a lion cub who avenges his father, Mufasa’s murder, and reclaims the throne. The story draws from Hamlet by depicting Simba’s journey from exile to confronting his uncle, Scar.
This film’s story arc also mirrors the Egyptian myth of Osiris and Horus. Mufasa’s brutal killing parallels Osiris’s murder by Set, while Simba’s rise against his uncle reflects Horus’s battle to restore order.
Such strong resonance with mythology and Shakespeare’s generationally revered work brings incredible depth to this timeless animated masterpiece.
2. The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix, directed by the Wachowskis, follows Neo, a hacker who is destined to liberate humans from a reality controlled by machines. The sci-fi hit, on many levels, mirrors the myth of Orpheus.
Neo’s trip into the matrix, a “digital underworld” that traps human beings, feels like Orpheus’s journey into the underworld to retrieve his beloved Eurydice. The Oracle, who gives Neo advice, is similar to the wise seer of Delphi from Greek myths. The movie’s big idea — a hero in search of the truth, again reminds us of Greek heroes like Theseus.
The Matrix’s cool, high-tech look puts these Classic mythologies in a modern, computer-filled world that feels even more relevant as the years roll by.
3. Wonder Woman (2017)
Wonder Woman is a story about Diana, a princess from an island of warrior women, who learns she is the daughter of Zeus, a Greek god. Diana leaves home to fight Ares, the war god, during World War I.
Patty Jenkins’ film uses Greek mythology on purpose, showing Amazons and gods in a modern setting. Diana fearlessly battles evil, just like Greek heroines in powerful ancient texts. Her fight with Ares is reminiscent of classic tales about stopping chaos and restoring peace.
With an exciting amalgamation of ancient stories and the World War I era, along with Gal Gadot’s journey as Diana, Jenkins crafted one of the coolest action films in recent memory.
4. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
Set in 1940s Spain, Pan’s Labyrinth tells the story of Ofelia, who meets a faun in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. The faun (like the Greek God Pan) gives her tasks to prove that she is a princess from a magical world.
The film uses Greek mythology on purpose, with the faun and a maze, similar to stories of Persephone, who visits the underworld. The power of the film lies in Guillermo del Toro’s effortless direction that blends actual danger with fairytale magic.
Pan’s Labyrinth is a fabulous coming together of spookiness and beauty, something Del Toro has become a master at portraying.
5. Black Panther (2018)
Black Panther follows T’Challa, a hero in the high-tech African nation of Wakanda, who gets powers from Bast, a panther goddess. T’Challa talks to the spirits of his ancestors, just like in popular African myths, creating eerie structural similarities right from the beginning.
The film cleverly blends Yoruba mythology by integrating the panther goddess and Zulu traditions through the ancestral plane, where kings commune with the spirits of their ancestors. It intelligently fuses these aspects with futuristic technology and a vibrant city. T’Challa’s role as a king is reminiscent of legendary leaders chosen by divine forces to battle against evil.
Black Panther brought African mythology into mainstream cinema in an engaging, relatable, and exciting way, rightfully resulting in it becoming a powerhouse success.
6. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief centers on Percy, a teenager who discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, a Greek god. Living in contemporary American society, Percy finds Zeus ruling from a skyscraper and the underworld hidden beneath Hollywood.
Similar to classic Greek mythology, Percy is on a mission to recover Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt. The film deliberately weaves these myths into a modern-day setting, featuring gods and creatures.
By blending ancient legends with contemporary life, the film made Greek mythology accessible and fun for viewers. Additionally, its intentional use of mythological elements introduced Greek mythology to a young, unfamiliar audience.
7. The Lighthouse (2019)
This 2019 indie sensation follows two men, Thomas and Ephraim, working at an isolated 1890s lighthouse where they spiral into mental chaos.
Akin to how Prometheus stole fire in Greek myths, Thomas protects the light, a symbol of forbidden power. He also acts cunning, like the shapeshifting god Proteus, constantly changing his story to manipulate Ephraim.
The film’s tense, unsettling atmosphere geniusely introduces mythology into its plot, enhancing both its structure and its characters. It took old Greek tales and made them maddeningly gripping and horrifying, creating a strong genre film for modern audiences.
8. Avatar (2009)
James Cameron’s 2009 global super hit follows Jake, a soldier who joins alien beings on Pandora. Similar to the Earth Mother in Native American myths, he embraces their goddess, Eywa. The Na’vi’s link to nature and spirits, along with Jake’s growth as a hero in their world, feels like a mythic journey.
The film draws from Navajo creation myths, where the Na’vi’s bond with Eywa reflects the Navajo’s harmony with Changing Woman, who sustains life. Also, the Na’vi’s reverence and worship of nature mirrors Lakota spiritual practices. Just like in the film, in Lakota practices, all living things are interconnected through sacred rituals.
In Avatar, the mythological elements provide the story with a strong foundation, which Cameron uses his impeccable technological filmmaking capabilities to make more immersive and unforgettable.
9. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Mad Max: Fury Road follows Max and Furiosa racing through desert wastelands to free enslaved women. The War Boys seek a heroic death to reach Valhalla, just like the Norse warriors. Meanwhile, Furiosa’s mission is reminiscent of Valkyrie’s quest.
These parallels are enhanced by the film’s chaotic world, its wild dusty vehicles, and the thrilling pace of the screenplay. The epic nature of the film’s story feels inherently mythic and larger-than-life.
Final Thoughts
These nine films show how classic mythology can feel fresh and exciting in modern cinema. From Greek gods to African spirits, they mix ancient stories with innovative, contemporary settings, creating a unique cinematic cocktail. Many of these films probably never intended to pose any similarities whatsoever, and I think that’s exactly what makes these parallels even more special.
