9 Most Romantic Rain Scenes In Movies
In cinema, a romantic kiss in the rain never goes out of fashion.

'The Notebook' (2004)
I mean, who doesn’t like going for a walk in the rain? And if you are not one of them, you must admit that one still enjoys sitting through those romantic rain scenes in movies.
Rain is undoubtedly romantic and dreamy. Cloudy skies and glimmering lights naturally make up for a romantic setting. Moreover, hearing nature’s pitter-patter makes you forget all the immediate distractions in the moment — small confrontations feel too personal, symbolizing a change, cleansing, or the storm of emotions within a person.
Cinematically speaking, rain is a tool that uplifts the intensity of a simple confession or a kiss.
Below is a list of movies that have graced our screens with some of the most romantic rain scenes ever. Let’s jump in.
9 Most Romantic Rain Scenes That’ll Make You Feel Loved
1. The Notebook (2004)
One of the most memorable romantic kisses. So iconic that actors even recreated it on the 2005 MTV Movie Awards.
After their boat ride on the lake is interrupted by a sudden downpour, Allie (Rachel McAdams) confronts Noah (Ryan Gosling) about not writing to her for the seven years they were apart. Noah clarifies that he did, in fact, write to her every day for a year; her mom kept the letters away. But, “it wasn’t over, it still isn’t over,” Noah tells her and delivers the kiss of a lifetime.
The rain plays a crucial role in intensifying the emotional tension, as well as a metaphor for their inner turmoil dissolving into each other's arms.
2. Spider-Man (2002)
Sam Raimi must have been a very romantic fellow as he crafted this upside-down, Spider-Man kiss. I remember as a kid that kiss went so viral before viral was even a word.
The scene starts at night as Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) fights off the goons who are following Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst), and she wants to return the favor. I mean, who gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to kiss Spider-Man? The choreography of the kiss was creative, but the backdrop of rain is what gives the scene its romantic aesthetic.
One interesting fact is that this scene was shot with Kirsten Dunst hanging from the ceiling while Tobey Maguire was standing upright. The frame was flipped upside down in post-production. Yeah, wrap your head around that, Spidey fans.
3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
The emotional climax of the scene follows a double separation. Holly (Audrey Hepburn) abandons her cat as the heavy rain batters the city. Also, her lover, Paul (George Peppard), leaves her alone in the taxi after she had rejected his marriage proposal.
Holly steps out to find her cat. The harsh weather reflects her feelings of loneliness and regret. The rain drizzling over her face does a good job of hiding her tears, as she fears ending up alone.
But in the cathartic final moment, she finds Paul, who also must have come out to see the cat. In the tradition of all great romantic stories, they kiss with the cat pressed in between.
4. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Hugh Grant plays Charles, who suffers from bad luck when it comes to love until he meets Carrie (Andie MacDowell) at a wedding. As their paths keep crossing through a series of weddings and a funeral, Charles realizes she’s the one.
In the final scene, he confesses his love to Carrie after abandoning his own wedding. The downpour of rain is non-stop, and the performance leading up to the kiss is witty, awkward, and very romantic. (P.S. Hugh Grant, wearing a white shirt as it rains, looks ridiculously handsome.)
5. Chasing Amy (1997)
Holden (Ben Affleck) is a comic book writer who falls in love with Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), who turns out to be a lesbian. But that doesn’t stop Holden from confessing his feelings to her in this raw and intense rainy scene.
Alyssa rages at him on the street for wanting to have a romantic relationship with her while knowing she’s a lesbian; it’d be hard for her to sustain such a relationship.
But why scream at him? I get the sense that Alyssa was screaming at herself more than Holden, as she, too, shares similar feelings. As Holden retreats with his shoulders slouched, she runs into him and kisses him with all her passion.
What makes this scene stand out is that, contrary to the witty tone of the movie throughout, this scene is all serious.
6. Step Up 2 (2008)
While studying at Maryland School of the Arts, Andie (Briana Evigan), a rebellious street dancer, teams up with Chase (Robert Hoffman) to form a team of dancers from different backgrounds, and they must dance together.
In the final moments of their underground dance battle, “The Streets,” Andie’s group nails it in the face-offs.
As the team celebrates, Chase pulls Andie close, and they share a tender moment. Fighting your feelings can only work for so long.
7. Little Women (2019)
Jo March (Saoirse Ronan) has no time for love in Little Women.
In her quest to defy societal gender norms to achieve independence, she actively rejects whatever she thinks will restrict her, including marriage proposals. That’s why she rejects Freddy (Louis Garrel), who, in the end, stops by to give one last goodbye before he leaves New York in search of a teaching job. Realizing her feelings for Freddy, Jo makes a run for the station before Freddy’s train departs.
She catches him in time and impulsively kisses him. For a woman who resisted love throughout her life, running after Freddy in the rain is romantic on a different level.
8. Match Point (2005)
Woody Allen’s Match Point is a philosophical thriller about class and infidelity.
There’s a clear, palpable attraction between Chris (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and his wife’s brother’s fiancée, Nola (Scarlett Johansson). Chris keeps the temptations within due to the risk of losing the newfound social status that he married into.
Finally, the tension bursts out when Chris follows Nola into a field after a family gathering. Both are drenched from head to toe in rain, and both are familiar with the guilt it brings if they cross the line. Yet, they do it anyway. The scene is intense and beautifully shot.
9. A Cinderella Story (2004)
A Cinderella Story is about a shy, high school senior, Samantha (Hilary Duff), who strikes a connection with her college football star, Austin (Chad Michael Murray), on the internet, with made-up names.
At the end of the movie, Samantha confronts Austin during a football game for not reciprocating his feelings in public, and she can’t stand it. In the moment of realization, Austin abandons his game and runs after Samantha.
He stops her in the stands to confess exactly when it starts raining, which is a symbol of Austin finally breaking free of the fear of judgment by popular groups at school.
