9 Movies That Reinvented Their Franchise
These movies are milestones in their respective franchises.

Casino Royale (2006)
Maintaining a franchise is not as easy as creating one. Sometimes a film will be a genuine miscalculation of the fans’ expectations, while other times it’s a creative misjudgment. At times, it could be plain bad luck, too.
In any case, fans can be more loyal than you would expect, and so I believe there’s always a chance for any failing franchise to reinvent itself.
In this article, we highlight some movie franchises that turned things around for themselves through sheer creative reinvention.
9 Films That Reinvented Their Franchise
1. Creed (2015)
Sylvester Stallone starrer Rocky paved the way for underdog movies and turned into a gigantic franchise over the years, with six movies under its banner. However, by Rocky V, things started looking bleak for the franchise. Stallone was years beyond his physical prime, and despite Rocky Balboa’s legacy, the fans were slightly done exploring the same character.
Creed, a spin-off featuring Rocky’s protégé, Adonis Creed, was a genius move. Not only did it revive the audience’s interest by shifting focus to a new and promising character, but it also kept Rocky’s legacy alive through the emotional connection that Creed shares with Rocky, ensuring that the past and the future remain connected and no audience is lost. Michael B. Jordan was definitely the perfect choice for this role.
2. Jurassic World (2015)
While it is true that Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park could have been left alone, I am all for the Jurassic World movies because I personally could never get enough of the dinosaurs.
Jurassic Park wasn’t a failing franchise, but Jurassic World brought a new perspective to the concept by bringing the dinosaurs into the modern world amid high-tech settings.
3. Casino Royale (2006)
The James Bond movies were synonymous with Sean Connery, since he played Bond in Dr. No (1962), so replacing him after Diamonds Are Forever (1971) was an almost impossible thought.
Since his retirement as Bond, several actors have played the iconic role.
When the makers introduced Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, it was quite a novel kickstart to a beloved franchise, with poker being the second star of the movie!
Since, different actors have played 007 as part of their own Bond universe, set against a unique tone and featuring a unique universe.
Who is your favorite Bond after Connery?
4. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
While the original antagonist of the Friday the 13th movies was Jason’s mother, the makers shifted the villain just in time, preventing the viewers from losing interest.
Jason, presumed dead, escapes from the morgue in the fourth film, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, and the franchise also introduces supernatural elements along the way, keeping the fun alive. The makers have also experimented with Jason’s looks quite often.
5. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)
The first two Mission Impossible movies primarily featured gunfights and outright action and quickly garnered as much popularity as the Bond movies, but Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol shot the entire franchise to a different league of its own.
The action shifted to espionage and technology, and Ethan's iconic Burj Khalifa climb set a new standard for stunts in Hollywood. Ever since, Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible movies have only surpassed the fans’ expectations with stunts that will spike your adrenaline!
6. Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
The original Ghostbusters movies already catered to young audiences, but with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the makers opened doors for children.
By introducing younger characters, such as the Spengler siblings and their friends, to take the lead in missions alongside original characters, the makers widened the audience pool and reduced the risk of the franchise going stale.
7. Fast Five (2011)
The Fast and Furious movies opened against the backdrop of the 2000s street racing culture. However, the makers were quick to adapt to the changing audience trends and revamped the franchise with Fast Five, which presented a heist story with the original characters.
The movie marks the franchise's shift from more car-oriented action to more fight-oriented action.
8. Bumblebee (2018)
The Transformers movies hit a dead end in 2017 when Transformers: The Last Knight was poorly received by audiences. But then, within a year, the franchise regained its lost reputation with Bumblebee.
The titular character’s G1 look brought freshness to the visuals, and the character-driven plot helped the audience connect with the leads, with Charlie and Bumblebee’s friendship winning hearts all over.
9. Prey (2022)
Predator was a huge success upon its release; however, the films that followed were nothing to brag about. So when Prey was announced, people didn’t really have much hope. However, to everyone’s surprise, Prey was indeed quite a worthy descendant of the original film.
The makers looked away from aliens and genetic engineering to pit nature directly against an unknown feral predator, and the movie features Indigenous action—bows, axes, and handmade weapons —as the story revolves around an Indigenous tribe.
The female lead, Naru, walks straight into danger to fight the predator and prove herself. After the original movie, Prey is the franchise's most critically acclaimed entry, widely praised for its action sequences and emotional resonance.
