'Stranger Things'
Did you, like me, spend New Year's Eve in Hawkins, Indiana, finding out what happened during that epic finale of Stranger Things? It turns out we got the most complex and largest episode of the series, which hit me with all the emotions I've felt over the last decade watching the series.
Today, I want to look at the ending of Stranger Things and explain some of the biggest questions and events that we saw wrap up the fifth season and the series.
Lucky for us, Netflix released its own breakdown that was useful in getting solid answers.
Let's dive in.

Stranger Things Cheat Sheet
The last five seasons of Stranger Things have taken me through around ten years of my life. From my 20s into my thirties. It's been weird to grow up alongside these characters and filmmakers, and to watch a show through all of it.
Over five seasons, Stranger Things evolved from a small-town mystery into a high-stakes battle for the fate of the world.
Let's break down the Cliff Notes of what has happened.
Season 1: The Boy Who Vanished
The story begins in 1983 when Will Byers disappears on his way home from a Dungeons & Dragons game.
While his mother, Joyce, and Police Chief Jim Hopper search for him, Will’s friends—Mike, Dustin, and Lucas—encounter a mysterious girl named Eleven with psychokinetic powers.
They discover a parallel dimension called the Upside Down and a monster known as the Demogorgon. The season ends with Eleven sacrificing herself to destroy the monster, while Will is rescued but secretly "infected" by the other world.
Season 2: The Shadow Monster
Set a year later, Will begins having "now-memories" of a massive, spider-like entity called the Mind Flayer.
Eleven, who survived and has been hiding in a cabin with Hopper, eventually returns to help. The group discovers a network of rotting tunnels beneath Hawkins.
To save the town, Eleven uses her full power to close the "Mothergate" at the Hawkins Lab, seemingly severing the connection to the Upside Down.
Season 3: The Starcourt Battle
In the summer of 1985, a secret Soviet base beneath the new Starcourt Mall tries to reopen the gate. The Mind Flayer returns, this time "building" a physical body out of melted townspeople (the Flayed) to kill Eleven.
In a climactic showdown at the mall, Billy Hargrove sacrifices himself to save Eleven, and Hopper is seemingly killed when Joyce is forced to close the gate, causing a massive explosion.
Season 4: The Beginning of the End
The crew is split across three locations: California, Russia (where Hopper is revealed to be a prisoner), and Hawkins.
A new villain, Vecna, begins physically murdering Hawkins teenagers. We learn that Vecna is actually Henry Creel (001), the first test subject from the lab, whom Eleven banished to the Upside Down years ago.
Though the group fights back, Vecna succeeds in opening four massive rifts across Hawkins, effectively bringing the Upside Down into the real world.
Season 5: The Final Stand
With Hawkins essentially a war zone, the town becomes the final battlefield. The "Abyss" (an alternate dimension where the Mind Flayer lives) begins to merge with Earth.
Eleven teams up with her "sister" Kali and Max to enter Vecna’s mind while the rest of the crew launches an assault in the Abyss to destroy the Mind Flayer.

The Stranger Things Finale
At the start of Episode 8, titled “The Rightside Up,” the crew wastes no time launching its final stand against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the Mind Flayer to save the world.
Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Kali (Linnea Berthelsen), and Max (Sadie Sink) team up to attack Henry (aka Vecna) in his mind, while Hopper (David Harbour) and Murray (Brett Gelman) prepare the trigger for the bomb that will destroy the Upside Down.
The rest of the party braces to enter the Abyss to rescue the kidnapped kids.
In a final act of justice, Joyce Byers delivers the killing blow to Vecna with an axe.
Eleven remains at the threshold to ensure the Upside Down collapses, seemingly vanishing along with the rifts to save her friends one last time.
How does Stranger Things End?
The series ends exactly how it began. In a full circle moment, we go back to a Dungeons & Dragons game with all the friends in the Wheeler's basement.
Will (Noah Schnapp), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max, and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) finish their final campaign together before shelving their D&D books and leaving the basement one by one.
As the party walks up the basement steps, Mike’s younger sister, Holly (Nell Fisher), and her friends rush down to begin their own D&D campaign.
That moment signals that Mike and his friends are leaving their childhood behind and passing the torch to the next generation of kids.
Who Dies in the Stranger Things Series Finale?
Not everyone survives the final Stranger Things episode. Hopper kills several members of the military’s Wolf Pack unit while attempting to rescue Kali from an ambush at Hawkins Lab in the Upside Down.
Lieutenant Akers (Alex Breaux) then murders Kali when Hopper refuses to give up Eleven’s location. Distraught over her sister’s apparent death, Eleven uses her powers to take out the remaining Wolf Pack soldiers before forcing Akers to turn the gun on himself.
Does Vecna Merge the Two Worlds?
Before their showdown with the Wolf Pack soldiers, Eleven and Kali stage an attack on their brother Henry in Camazotz, which stops him from merging the Abyss with Earth.
That also gives the rest of the crew time to climb the Squawk radio tower, aka the beanstalk, and slip into the Abyss, where they plan to rescue the kidnapped children from the Pain Tree.
What Happens With the Pain Tree and Mind Flayer?
In the Abyss, Joyce (Winona Ryder), Will, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Steve (Joe Keery), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Robin (Maya Hawke), and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) find the entrance to the Pain Tree.
But then the branches curve into spider-like legs, revealing that the Pain Tree is the Mind Flayer. While Eleven fights Henry inside the Mind Flayer’s body, the rest of the gang works together to defeat the enormous monster on the ground.
Nancy fires at the Mind Flayer and lures it toward a canyon to bait it. As it follows her, Jonathan and Robin attack from above with a flamethrower and rocks.
Elsewhere, Lucas launches several balloon accelerants with his wrist rocket, and Mike sets the liquid ablaze with the flare gun Nancy gave him.
Back on the ground, Dustin and Steve attack the Mind Flayer from underneath, stabbing its egg sacks with their spears.
What’s Inside the Scientist’s Briefcase?
Episode 8 reveals that after young Henry bludgeons the unnamed scientist, he opens the man’s briefcase and finds a rock containing Mind Flayer particles, which then possess him.
Who Ultimately Kills Vecna?
After the Mind Flayer is dead, Eleven is close to killing her brother, Henry, which would end the Vecna nightmare for everyone. Just when it looks like Henry gains the upper hand, Will overpowers him. This distracts the monster long enough for Eleven to drive his body through a spire.
But Joyce is the person who actually kills Vecna, beheading him with her axe. She delivers the line, “You f*cked with the wrong family.”
And that punctuated the entire series.

Was Vecna Controlling the Mind Flayer?
Before Henry dies, Will tries to convince him that the Mind Flayer is using him. But Henry insists that it was his choice to become one with the Mind Flayer.
What Happens to the Upside Down?
Once Vecna and the Mind Flayer are defeated, Hopper and Murray set the timer on the bomb — using Prince’s 1984 album, Purple Rain, as the trigger.
What Happens to Eleven?
In a heartbreaking twist, Eleven decides to stay behind in the Upside Down to ensure the gates can never be opened again. When the bomb is triggered, Eleven pulls Mike into a void to say goodbye. He watches as she disappears along with the Upside Down.
During that last D&D game, Mike spins a hopeful tale where Eleven escapes undetected.
And it's left up to the viewers to decide what happens to her. As an optimist, I like to think she made it out to a more peaceful life.
For the gang playing at the table, they hold her in their hearts forever, and know she saved and changed all their lives.
Where Do the Kids End Up?
- Max and Lucas: Finally have their movie date and settle down together.
- Dustin: Continues his studies at university but still hangs out with Steve.
- Will: Comes out and finds acceptance in a bigger city.
- Mike: Becomes a professional writer.
What About the Older Teens?
- Steve: Stays in Hawkins to coach little league baseball and teach sex ed
- Robin: Attends Smith College in Massachusetts.
- Nancy: Takes a job at the Boston Herald.
- Jonathan: Studies filmmaking at NYU.
Do Hopper and Joyce Stay Together?
Yes. Hopper finally proposes to Joyce at Enzo's. They plan to move to Montauk, New York, where Hopper will serve as the chief of police. This is also an easter egg as the show's original working title was The Montauk Project.
Why the "Heroes" Cover for the Credits?
The show ends with David Bowie’s original version of “Heroes.” Ross Duffer explains, “To use the original Bowie version just felt right and fitting for the conclusion. It is, in some ways, an anthem for Stranger Things.”
I have to agree with him.

Summing It All Up
This was an epic series that really challenged viewers and let them grow with the show. It was fun, heartfelt, and will go down in history as the show that really launched Netflix and drove subscribers to be a part of this story.
I will miss it, but can't wait to see what the Duffers do next.
