Sony has released a new desktop application dubbed Imaging Edge Webcam that allows users to turn compatible Sony digital cameras into a webcam via USB. The best part, it's free.

With many of us working at home, taking virtual meetings, or creating streaming channels online, camera manufacturers have finally go their act together to offer no-brainer solutions to creating high-quality livestreaming web video with its popular cameras. Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm have all released their own versions of the software, while others, like the Sigma fp, have webcam functionality built in.

Sony has got into the game with software that's currently compatible with 35 different cameras. Among them are the a9 II, a9, a7R IV, a7R III, a7R II, a7S II, a7S, a7 III, a7 II, a6600, a6400, a6100, RX100 VII, RX100 VI, RX0 II, RX0, and the new a7S III.

Users will need to make sure their camera firmware is up to date and have a Windows 10 64-bit machine. After downloading the software and connecting it to your computer, the camera will allow you to access the majority of its features including autofocus. The one thing to point out is the aspect ratio will remain 16:9 no matter the setting.

As with the other companies, expect Sony to offer a macOS version in the future. You can download the Imaging Edge Webcam software here.
