The Best War Movie Scripts
'Full Metal Jacket' directed by Stanley KubrickCREDIT: Warner Bros.- Apocalypse Now (1979) - Written by John Milius and Francis Ford Coppola, this script plunges into the madness of the Vietnam War as Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission upriver to assassinate a renegade American colonel. It's a surreal and philosophical journey exploring the darkest corners of human nature amidst the chaos of conflict.
- Platoon (1986) - Oliver Stone's semi-autobiographical script offers a raw and unflinching look at the Vietnam War through the eyes of a young volunteer. It vividly portrays the brutal realities of combat and the moral struggles faced by soldiers caught between two sergeants with vastly different ideologies.
- Saving Private Ryan (1998) - Robert Rodat's powerful script follows a squad of U.S. soldiers during World War II on a perilous mission behind enemy lines to find and bring home a paratrooper whose three brothers have already been killed in action. It's renowned for its visceral opening D-Day sequence and its exploration of sacrifice and duty.
- Full Metal Jacket (1987) - The screenplay by Stanley Kubrick, Michael Herr, and Gustav Hasford (based on Hasford's novel "The Short-Timers") is a chilling two-part examination of the Vietnam War. It first details the brutal dehumanization of Marine recruits in boot camp, then follows them into the nightmarish urban combat of the Tet Offensive, known for its sharp, dark humor and critique of military indoctrination.
- Das Boot (1981) - Wolfgang Petersen's claustrophobic and intensely suspenseful script (based on the novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim) takes viewers inside a German U-boat during World War II. It offers a gripping portrayal of the cramped conditions, terrifying underwater battles, and the psychological toll on the young crew as they face the grim realities of war.
- The Deer Hunter (1978) - With a story by Michael Cimino, Deric Washburn, Louis Garfinkle & Quinn K. Redeker, and a screenplay by Deric Washburn, this epic script explores the devastating impact of the Vietnam War on a group of friends from a small Pennsylvania steel town. It's a harrowing examination of trauma, friendship, and the loss of innocence, both on the battlefield and back home.
- Paths of Glory (1957) - Set during World War I, the incisive script by Stanley Kubrick, Calder Willingham, and Jim Thompson (based on the novel by Humphrey Cobb) critiques the hypocrisy and callousness of military leadership. It follows a French colonel who must defend his men against charges of cowardice after they refuse to undertake a suicidal mission.
- Lawrence of Arabia (1962) - Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson's sweeping script (based on the writings of T.E. Lawrence) chronicles the extraordinary true story of T.E. Lawrence, a British officer who unites diverse Arab tribes to fight the Turks during World War I. It's a grand epic exploring themes of identity, loyalty, and the complexities of warfare and colonialism.
- Schindler's List (1993) - Steven Zaillian's profoundly moving script (based on the novel by Thomas Keneally) tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. It's a powerful testament to courage and humanity in the face of unimaginable horror.
- All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) - (Based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque) The script by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson, and Ian Stokell offers a visceral and emotionally devastating modern take on Remarque's novel, emphasizing the sheer brutality, futility, and human cost of trench warfare on the Western Front for a new generation.
