Who Is Dave Filoni and What Does He Mean for 'Star Wars'?
He's next in line to the galactic throne.

The Clone Wars
Reports emerged this week that Dave Filoni will be taking over as co-president of Lucasfilm, alongside Lynwen Brennan, as Kathleen Kennedy steps down from her role.
According to Puck News, an official announcement could come within weeks.
For longtime Star Wars fans, it makes sense. We definitely know his name in my house, because Filoni has spent nearly two decades building the galaxy far, far away under George Lucas' mentorship, and many consider him the closest thing to Lucas' creative successor.
Who Is Dave Filoni?
In 2005, Lucas personally recruited Filoni from Nickelodeon, where he'd been directing episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Filoni told Vanity Fair he initially thought the job offer was a joke. He couldn't believe Lucasfilm Animation was real, much less that Lucas wanted him to oversee a Clone Wars animated series.
That show ran for seven seasons and transformed how audiences understood the prequels and their characters, adding depth to background players and even small-time original trilogy characters who became fan favorites (read: Sy Snootles). It also gave us Ahsoka Tano (who has gone on to star in her own spin-off), Rex, and other notable clones.
Lucas' influence on Filoni is deep. Filoni has described working with Lucas as a daily masterclass, likening their relationship to Anakin and Obi-Wan.

I mean, it was a masterclass every day. It was a masterclass. So I'm trying to apply that every day and pass on what I've learned. I mean, it is the Jedi experience I've had. And so honestly, that's probably my biggest responsibility now, is to try to explain to people what George explained to me about why this all works, why it's different and unique from any other fantasy series or fiction out there… George leant into a unique point of view, and it's something that we have to take care of and work on again, and again, and again.
After The Clone Wars, he developed Star Wars Rebels, then moved into live action as an executive producer on The Mandalorian alongside Jon Favreau. He also created Ahsoka and has been involved with The Book of Boba Fett and Skeleton Crew.
What Will Star Wars Look Like Moving Forward?
The reported succession plan has Filoni handling creative decisions while Brennan, currently president and general manager of Lucasfilm Business, manages executive operations.
This mirrors how DC Studios operates with James Gunn and Peter Safran, according to multiple outlets. Kennedy, who has led Lucasfilm since 2012, will reportedly continue as a producer on upcoming projects, including The Mandalorian and Grogu, which hits theaters in May.
What does this mean for Star Wars?
Filoni's track record has given fans character-driven storytelling that respects established lore while expanding the galaxy in meaningful ways. We get fan service with genuine narrative scope and sometimes surprisingly heartfelt, adult storytelling. Though Filoni's work started in the children's television space, there were moments that felt shockingly mature even in his animated shows.
What audiences likely hope for most is someone who understands the universe and is willing to take some creative risks, balancing serving a diverse fanbase with moving a galactic story forward.
