NAB 2015

AJA Really Wants You to Try Their CION Cinema Camera, Is Lending Them Out for Free

And here's the new CION reel.

Here are the major new features in the 1.2 firmware update for the CION:

  • Video Levels — Improved video levels with higher IRE values available for various EI, gamma and color correction combinations
  • Improved white balance performance for over-exposure.
  • Additional gamma and colour correction options for higher EI 800 and EI 1000 values
  • New LUT support —Internal video gamma LUT for external monitoring of the Expanded 1 or disabled gamma selections when an external LUT device is not in use
  • Auto white balance alarm — notifies users if an image does not contain a sufficient value of white or grey to perform an appropriate white balance
  • Time lapse function indicator — interval record (time lapse) indication for the superimposed monitoring overlay.
  • Expanded RGB output — SMPTE or full RGB range values can now be selected for the main SDI outputs.

If you want to sign up to try out a CION camera free of charge, head on over to AJA's #TryCION page. Just as a heads up, the program is currently only available in North America.

If you post things like this – things that are exclusive to US or North America – could you please inform us about it in the article? Saves a lot of time.

We have submitted a request to test the CION. Our market is mostly with drones and gimbals so we want to see if the camera is a good candidate for our drone equipment.

First, CION reads and sounds so much better than URSA. Second, that reel looks great. Definitely punchy blacks and whatnot, but I wouldn't mind watching a film that utilizes that image.

Ask 'em when it'll arrive in Oz ?
My choices are boiling down to Cion or KiniMini4K ( yeah, I know I could get 2 of the Kinefinitys for the price of one Cion ) so my stuff won't look the same as everyone else shooting on Red or BMD or Canon EF.
Would love to try a Cion with my bag full of classic primes....

I really like AJA ..... Totally different mentality, the camera gives great images and they fixed the highlight issues. They know they aren't perfect but they are trying to be.

Yeah, this is just a big PR deal. I signed up right away and about a month later they notified me that "At this time we have filled all the available places on the loan program and we will not be able to fulfil your request. We wish you the very best for your project and thank you again for your application."

Yet, when you go to the website they still let people sign up. Feels a little fishy to me. They get lots of emails and production related information under the guise that you can get a free camera rental from them and a bunch of good PR.

I won't be buying a Cion!
