Developed by Alpine Labs, Pulse is a camera trigger that gives users complete wireless control over their cameras right from their smartphone simply by plugging it into their DSLRs USB port. This thing is certainly hitting a nerve with photographers and filmmakers, as it has already surpassed its goal on Kickstarter by almost $500K (with over 6000 backers). Pulse has a lot of great features for all types of filmmakers, regardless of their level of expertise. Its form factor is not only sleek, but it's small enough to transport easily, as well as mount on a hotshoe without making your DSLR unwieldy. It's compatible with over 60 Canon and Nikon DSLRs (and the Panasonic GH4, too), allows you to control multiple Pulse-equipped cameras at once using one smartphone, and because it plugs into your camera's USB port (as opposed to the trigger port), it allows you to control video.

But perhaps the most impressive aspect of Pulse is its app, which allows you to control your camera settings straight from your smartphone.

Camera triggers are traditionally used specifically to shoot time-lapses, and since Alpine Labs specializes in this area image capture, there are certainly features that make Pulse stand out from competitors, namely with its Exposure Ramping feature. Designed to be used with LRTimelapse, it helps users capture the "Holy Grail" of time-lapses, day-to-night transitions, by allowing them to ramp up their ISO and shutter speed without having to touch their camera.

So, if you're a seasoned time-lapse photographer looking for a tool that is portable and easy to use, or if you're a filmmaker without a crew that needs to control multiple cameras at once, or if you just want to take the most epic selfies imaginable, Pulse will certainly help you out. And at just $74 a pop (Kickstarter price only), I'd say there's no big financial risk in giving it a whirl.
