Throughout the year, we feature a number of short film competitions that are on the search for awesome entries, finding that the more focused and specific the competitions are, the more beneficial it is to the applying filmmaker. This latest one, KIN X DUST $10,000 Sci-Fi Short Film Competition, is quite specific indeed, looking for a narrative short (between one and 15-minutes long) that equally shares family and otherworldly values.

A division of the distribution company Gunpowder & SkyDUST is teaming up with Lionsgate for this initiative, offering a $10,000 cash prize to a short film that, inspired by DUST's latest upcoming release—Jonathan and Josh Baker's Kin—is birthed from the tagline "no bond is stronger than family." If you can create a nifty sci-short that uses familial (and perhaps extraterrestrial) themes appropriately, The Baker Brothers, DUST, and Lionsgate may just choose you to receive the grant and subsequently meet The Baker Brothers and have your film premiere on WatchDust.com

In a statement, David Edwards, Lionsgate Senior Vice President of Digital Marketing, said, “We’re proud to partner with DUST and our Kin directors, Jonathan and Josh, on a competition that gives emerging and established filmmakers a chance to share their talent with sci-fi fans. This initiative is a creative, cutting-edge way to explore the meaning of family and to celebrate artists and the upcoming release of our film.”

Your film must explore the theme of family through the lens of science fiction.

What are the rules? Not many! You must be a U.S. resident and must submit a one-to-15 minute short that carefully "explores the theme of family through the lens of science fiction."

If you're not selected as the winner of the competition, you may be selected as one of the three runner-ups (chosen by the judging panel) for the Audience Award (chosen by the larger DUST community, made up of over two million fans). While the winner of the Audience Award will not receive $10,000, they will still be granted a premiere on WatchDust.com, two free tickets to see Kin, and a promotional swag bag. An audience awaits your work!

Submissions are currently open through August 20th, 2018 so learn more and apply here now
