The Austin Film Festival and Writers Conference is back for its 30th year and is ready to celebrate up-and-coming filmmakers in our community. Often billing itself as one of the best festivals for writers, AFF is a great launching pad for filmmakers and screenwriters from across the globe to break into the industry.
Filmmakers and cinema lovers alike come together in Austin, Texas, to celebrate and showcase projects from feature-length dramas to comedic shorts. AFF will take place over six days, from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2, 2023, and feature panel conversations and discussions on the art of film and TV with some of the industry’s biggest names.
A film festival wouldn’t be complete without films to watch and celebrate amongst fellow movie lovers. Screenings of films submitted to the fest by filmmakers like you will highlight the best emerging talent and premiere studio films as part of its programming.

As one of the largest and most respected screenplay competitions in the United States, AFF is partnering with Enderby Entertainment, AMC Networks, WarnerMedia, Rooster Teeth, and Josephson Entertainment this year to provide new opportunities for screenwriters and filmmakers, including personalized attention regardless of placement and multiple readings throughout the process. Entrants can opt-in for free “reader comments” to help summarize reader's notes on submitted screenplays.
We have talked about AFF’s reputation many times at NFS. It is one of the five best screenplay competitions, despite its quality of feedback in 2021. Hopefully, the fest has learned from that mistake and found a way to regain the reputation it once held while providing filmmakers and representatives in the industry with a safe and valuable environment to build relationships.
AFF is now accepting submissions for the 2023 Screenplay, Film, and Digital Series Competitions. You can visit AFF’s website to submit your screenplay, digital series, films, fiction podcast, plays, or success stories now until the early bird deadline on March 23, 2023.
