Justin Lin Addresses That Rocket Ship in the 'F9' Trailer
Is the Fast and Furious crew headed to space?
The Internet is a wild place. Ever since the rise of social media, fans everywhere have had an influence on their favorite projects. Executives read the comments, and they like to service the fans, for better or worse. I still am in awe they did reshoots on Snakes on a Plane to add some catchphrases based on a message board.
One of the most popular tweet threads was fans demanding that the Fast franchise find a way to go to space. Well, yesterday, when we saw theF9 trailer, we saw a brief scene with what looks like a car ready to shoot them to the moon.
It was kind of like your wish coming true, and then immediately worrying about what you got. I wanted it for so long, and it looks so fun, but I got anxious about them sticking the landing.
But never fear, it seems like this topic already came up when developing the movie.
Justin Lin, the director of the movie, told Collider, "I think through the years, part of the fun is to come up with crazy ideas to challenge ourselves. But I have to say, we never do it just for sake of shock value. It always takes something from the theme or the character journey. I can say that when I was working on Fast 9, there was a thread that felt very appropriate to take us to places that we’ve never gone to. I drove to Vin’s house and I sat down with him and we looked at each other and we were like, 'Okay, this is the one. This is the one that we’re going to try.' And it felt very appropriate. So, I kind of can’t wait to share with the world, because the more we push and do crazier stunts and set-pieces, the more we have to check ourselves to make sure we earn that."
I think we can breathe a sigh of relief that the space choice was based on character and theme and not serving a meme on Twitter. I am on the edge of my seat waiting to get back to the theater, and Lin seems to have laid down the gauntlet for big fun.
