These Cameras Were the Most-Rented for 2021

What were the most popular camera rentals this year?

With the end of the year coming upon us, has released its list of the most popular camera rentals for 2021. While Sony enjoyed three of the top five spots for cinema cameras, it was the Canon C70 that won the Christmas turkey. And it wasn’t even close.

The top five shook out like this:

  1. Canon EOS C70 Cinema Camera (RF)
  2. Sony FX3 Full-Frame Cinema Camera
  3. Sony Alpha 1
  4. Sony FX6 Full-Frame Cinema Camera
  5. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro (EF)

Just outside of the top five, looking in, comes contenders for notable mention: the RED DIGITAL CINEMA KOMODO 6K Camera Production Kit and the Nikon Z 7II

The LensRentals report also stated that the C70 was the most popular “by a large margin,” and attributes this mainly to the popularity of Canon’s Mirrorless RF lens mount.  “It really further solidifies the industry’s response to Canon’s RF lens mount”  states Lensrentals’ editor Zach Sutton. “The RF lens mount continues to grow in its market share as more people trade in their DSLRs and move to the Canon mirrorless platform.”

LensRentals also indicated that the remainder of the top 20 consisted of lenses, a light package, and video accessories, including the small HD 24” 4K pro monitor and the Blackmagic ATEM 2 Advanced panel. This could underscore that with more social portals focusing on video, that this style of content creation is more widespread than in previous years. “Additionally, it seems that the professional video market has really taken over from previous years, with much of the list for 2021 being in the professional video camera department,” Sutton added.

Leading the still camera rentals was the Sony Alpha 1, which came in as the number three rental overall.

Uh- need to read the original blogs more closely and not jump to conclusions. The C70 tops in the "new products of 2021" If you read the blog post "The most Rented Photo and Video Gear of 2021, you will see the C70 is #17, the C300 MkII is #12, the Sony A7S3 is #5 and the Canon R5 is #1. Now we don't know if the R5 and A7S3 are primarily rented for photo or video, but the C300M2 still outrents the C70 according to Lensrentals.

I would venture to guess the popularity of the C70 is not necessarily due to the RF lens mount in 2021- rather the Canon EF to RF first party adapter, which makes the C70 a huge rental success with Lensrentals. But that's just a guess.

Interesting where the FX3 landed, per Lensrentals "New for 2021" considering all the luke warm reviews it earned when it came out.

It's also because more people own or buy Sony cameras rather than rent. Its still hard to get a A7s3, FX6 and FX9 its still out of stock with most vendors and the demand is high, where as you can buy a c70 and r5 right now and have it delivered in a couple of days.

Very telling in the creation of media that the Canon brand keeps improving for creators. The financial access point together with its professional quality is a key to the shifting media landscape. When creators can make it look professional on a more cost-effective basis, then there is more media. Then supply and demand - together with a quality judgement - really enter into the equation. I have both Canons and Sony. The Sony camera is the FS100, ancient by today's standards, but its sensor was superb for the cost.
