The flagship mirrorless camera in Nikon’s Z series is receiving some significant improvements, including enhanced focus, auto capture, and flexible color picture control settings. Best known as a professional-grade mirrorless camera capable of offering high-res 8K video and a host of pro-level photo and video capabilities, the Nikon Z9 was already quite a beast.

However, this new firmware update (version 5.30) should take things to the next level.

Here’s what you need to know about everything new coming to the Nikon Z9—and how that might change its pricey, but capable, offering point for interested videographers and filmmakers.

Nikon Z9 Firmware Update

So, the crux of this new firmware update really has to do with focus enhancements, which aim to improve the camera’s subject acquisition, tracking, and stability capabilities. If you’re looking to shoot or record high-speed and fast-moving subjects (like sports or wildlife), this is a nice upgrade.

The Nikon Z9 is also getting a new autofocus standby position and face detection auto capture function that aims to allow users to rely less on third-party triggering devices and just let the camera do things itself.

The other big budget here is new flexible color picture control support that will allow Nikon’s image browsing, processing, and editing software (NX Studio) to load settings onto the camera for users to preview in real time.
