One of my favorite things IndieWire does is compile lists of different filmmakers' favorite films based on past interviews, and the site's latest published list zeros in on the movies that have inspired the career of legendary director Christopher Nolan.

They span all of Hollywood history, from the silent era through today. From science-fiction classics like Alien, 2001, and Blade Runner 2049 to war epics Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line.

So, what else is on the list?

It’s interesting to see Sir Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg with multiple movies on this list.

And those movies come with high praise. Nolan described how Close Encounters of the Third Kind "addressed the idea of this moment when humans would meet aliens from a family perspective and a very relatable human perspective. I liked the idea of trying to give today’s audiences some sense of that form of storyline."
