Mud, Blood, and 4:3 Aspect Ratio: The Robert Eggers 'Werewulf' Trailer
Get your Middle English Dictionary ready. We're going back in time for some horror.

'Werewulf'
Robert Eggers is one of those crazy directors who I feel like spends a wild amount of time making his films immersive experiences. From building real Viking ships for The Northman to shooting thousands of rats for Nosferatu, his stuff always provides something singular.
And now, he's taking on werewolves for Universal with his mythic picture, Werewulf.
The first trailer has dropped, and we have it below for your enjoyment.
Let's dive in.
Werewulf Trailer
This is one of those claustrophobic 4:3 frames that we've seen Eggers do so well in The Lighthouse, and this one has animals hunting us in it.
The frame draws your eyes up to the oppressive tree lines of 13th-century England and down into the literal muck that sticks to every character on screen.
We meet Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character, who is roaming the woods, and a boy who grows up cursed. The world is full of terrifying people who look so creepy, nd eveyrone needs a bath. Eventually, he begins to write and foam at the mouth in ways that are transforming him, like a dog with rabies.
This is all captured on grainy 35mm film, which shows up in the low light and gives us a very haunting feeling.
To make this movie, Eggers is digging deep into the 1300s medieval lore, and we even hear some Middle-English dialogue.
Like any Eggers movie, a lot of this stuff is done with practical effects, which makes it all the more impressive.
The camera is close on people, and the light and shadows at play here add even more haunts to every frame.
Summing It All Up
Robert Eggers continues to prove that specificity is the ultimate tool for suspense and that he's a master at creating a reality with it.
Werwulf lands in theaters on December 25th 2026.
