8 Serious Scenes That Are Actually Funny (Whether They Meant to Be or Not)
Stoic faces; roaring laughter!

Signs (2002)
I am one of those people who laugh out loud in the most serious situations. Once, my washing machine caught fire due to a short circuit, and I burst out laughing as the fire threatened the appliance. My neighbors froze in the middle of their help, trying to gauge whether I was even sane.
In my defense, it was amusing how another set of my clothes, hanging right above the blazing machine, was playing “catch me if you can” with the dancing flames.
Even the most serious events can be funny from a changed perspective. Isn’t that exactly what comedy does? However, sometimes humor reveals itself in the most serious situations without us even planning it.
In this article, we’re looking at movie scenes that were meant to be serious but will make you laugh (or at least giggle).
Serious Movie Scenes That Were Actually Hilarious
1. Signs (2002)—The Dinner Scene
M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs is a story of survival, where a single father tries to save his family from the attacks of mysterious aliens. Amid all the fear, chaos, and relentless attempts of survival, this one scene definitely cuts the tension for one bit, inadvertently.
The entire family is sitting at the table, for what they think is their last supper. The kids want to say grace before their food, but a disagreement erupts when their father, Graham, tells them he is done with praying. He roars at the kids to dig into their food.
When they don’t, he begins eating angrily. It’s an emotional moment as we’re nearing the climax, but somehow, Mel Gibson stuffing his face while the children cry, combined with the ominous background score, is hilarious to me. The daughter is choking on tears, while the father does the same on his mashed potatoes, and his son and brother stare in confusion!
2. Jurassic World—The Margarita Man Scene

In the face of a full-blown dinosaur attack, what do you do? Run, right? Not the Margarita Man. He’d rather make sure he has his two forgotten drinks.
The unnamed character (who is actually Jimmy Buffett) carries two margarita glasses and begins running, navigating waves of people… for a moment, you forget about the pterodactyl attack, and want to follow him to his cool party!
3. Ghost—Sam’s Death
It fascinates me how morbidity can be funny at times. People’s reaction to death only aids the cause.
What is with Patrick Swayze’s constant googly frown in this scene? Also, why is Demi Moore performing like she is blind? Look at her eyes—they’re weirdly zoned out. Even at the hospital, when the doctor leads her out, you’d mistake her for a blind person.
This scene covers the inciting incident and is definitely serious in tone, but the actors’ performances don’t really support the cause.
4. Disclosure—The Hacking Scene
I don’t think there’s any possible way that I could have imagined digital hacking in the way they did in Disclosure. Michael Douglas turns himself into a virtual entity and steps into the computer storage (which looks like an enormous filing room), going through every digital file, one by one, manually, as if digital data were basically filed in folders as PDFs.
Did they really not know anything about computer hacking back in the ‘90s? Such a literal approach to the entire concept is hilarious and, quite honestly, fascinating.
5. First Blood—Trautman in the Crowded Bar
The fact that I’m including this scene from First Blood is proof of my twisted sense of humor. Two people, Richard Crenna’s Trautman and Brian Dennehy’s Sheriff Will Teasle, are sharing a drink, discussing one person they mutually know—Rambo. Both men have different perspectives on him.
In the end, it’s almost like an ex-girlfriend and the present girlfriend have gotten together to discuss a single man. With the sprinkle of sexual innuendo, this intense scene gets funnier with each rewatch.
6. Brothers—Sam’s Outburst at Maggie's Birthday
I cannot even begin to imagine what Sam might have gone through in this story; however, it is really funny when Toby Maguire confronts Jake Gyllenhaal’s Tommy for sleeping with his wife while he was away at war.
I mean, look at the two people. Sam threatening Tommy over his suspicions is kind of funny to me, looking at the physical structure of the two actors. Gyllenhaal towering over an enraged Maguire, who is much smaller in size, is straight-up slapstick!
7. Lawless—Closing Scene

This is the kind of denouement that you’re hardly ever prepared for. After surviving bullets, the fact that Forrest drunkenly falls into a frozen lake and succumbs to pneumonia was both shocking and extremely funny for me. So much drama, intensity, and grit—and then the lead just dies!
8. The Dark Knight—Rachel’s Death
- YouTube
Can you tell me why Rachel died? Nope, not because the Joker killed her. But because the orphaned anti-hero needed an additional purpose to save Gotham, and the villain needed some ashes to rise from. Harvey Dent crying out her name anytime someone mentions her could be a great drinking game. While we’re not pointing out a particular scene, Dent, as an emotional wreck, is humorous at times.
