The Sony a7 V Brings 7K Oversampled 4K Video and AI Powers to Your Hybrid Shoots
Here’s your first look at the new Sony a7 V, its 7K oversampled 4K video recording, and its AI-powered autofocus capabilities.

Sony a7 V
A new Sony camera is here, and for that, we’re always thankful. Sony has rolled out the fifth generation of its popular Alpha 7 Full-Frame mirrorless camera lineup, as the a7 V (ILCE-7M5) is billing itself as a “Goldilocks” camera that’s not afraid to punch above its weight class.
Designed to be a hybrid mirrorless camera with strong photo performance and astute video recording capabilities, the Sony a7 V is likely to make a name for itself, more so based on its AI-based subject recognition and autofocus tech, which will help it stand out from its flagship sibling cameras.
Let’s take a look at the new Sony a7 V and explore what it can offer as a workhorse camera that should be capable of handling everything from high-speed action photography to daily vlogs to full multimedia coverage of events.
The New Sony a7 V Camera
Powered by a newly developed partially stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with approximately 33.0 effective megapixels, the Sony a7 V will also feature a new image processing engine BIONZ XR2 that will incorporate the AI processing unit functions of the latest Alpha series.
“The Alpha 7 V resets expectations on what an all-around Full-frame camera can achieve. By evolving autofocus intelligence, color science, and system responsiveness, we’re enriching our expanding lineup with a powerful new option that provides creators with an advanced tool capable of keeping up with their creativity and bringing them one step closer to achieving their dreams.” — Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc.
With these innovations, Sony is promising that the a7 V will be able to deliver some significant performance boosts across pretty much every aspect of its imaging, including improvements with Real-time Recognition AF (Auto-Focus), Real-time Tracking, speed, stable color accuracy, still capture, and video versatility.
7K Oversampled 4K Video Recording
Looking at the Sony a7 V’s video specs specifically, the new camera will be able to make use of its high-resolution sensor and fast processing capability to offer UHD 4K 60p XAVC HS 10-bit recording using the full width of the sensor. This should offer 7K full pixel readout for solid sharpness and realism.
Plus, if users use a Super 35 crop, high-speed recording will be further possible at up to UHD 4K 120p or FHD 240p for slow-motion playback. The a7 V will also offer extended recording times, thanks in part to a more efficient heat dissipation. (Sony reports that a unique Sigma-shaped graphite heatsink is built into the stabilization unit, which should improve thermal consistency during extended clips.)
The Sony a7 V will also feature some advanced color control options, as S-Cinetone will be able to be used to deliver distinct colors and healthy-looking skin tone rendering that matches many FX-series and a-series cameras.
S-Log3 will also be available for producing a 15+-stop dynamic range with increased grading control in the shadow to mid-tone regions of the image, and users will further be able to import LUTs via Creators' Cloud for accurate monitoring while recording.

Set to be available in packages with a FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II standard zoom lens (more on that lens later), the Sony a7 V, as a base unit, is available for preorder now, with units expected to start shipping in mid-December.
