In what might eventually go into the history books as the most minor camera update of all time, Sony has quietly released a new camera. The Sony FX3a is pretty much exactly the same as the previous Sony FX3. So much so that there wasn’t the usual standard press release from the company, and outside of Sony’s own website it doesn’t look like any retailers are changing the name of this new camera.

Still, it’s worth covering, especially if you’re a Sony shooter or fan and interested in knowing all of the exciting details about the oh-so-minor changes set to be introduced with the Sony FX3a—so let’s check those out!

Introducing the Sony FX3a

Basically, the only changes of note between the Sony FX3 and the Sony FX3a are minor hardware and LCD panel resolution changes. According to Sony, there are just three differences between the two camera versions, which include:

  • LCD panel resolution change to 2,359,296 dots from 1,440,000 dots
  • NFC functionality removed
  • Infrared remote control light receiving element removed

And that’s pretty much it. Now, with that being said, the Sony FX3a (née FX3) is still very much a very capable hybrid camera for both photo and video shooters and also very much still worth checking out.

Re-Introducing the Sony FX3(a)

With a compact design for solo shooters, for travel applications, and to serve as an ideal B cam, the Sony FX3 borrows from both the Cinema Line and Alpha series of cameras to create an optimized portable cinema camera. The FX3 features all the imaging attributes you'd expect from this class but sports a new lightweight, handheld form with a streamlined profile and a "cage-free" design offering the ability to secure various accessories directly to the camera body.
