The Sony FX2 Is Here to Offer Expanded Cinema Line Versatility to All Creatives
A look at the new Sony FX2 and how it’s designed to be a hybrid cinema camera for all types of content creators.

Sony FX2
Well, it’s finally (officially) here. The FX2 has been introduced by Sony, formally expanding the company’s cinema line to include a versatile option for different types of creatives.
Armed with a 33MP full-frame sensor and powered with new AI features, let’s look at how the Sony FX2 promises to be an ideal hybrid cinema camera option for filmmakers, as well as photographers and hybrid creators.
Meet the Sony FX2
Powered with a 33MP full-frame sensor, the AI-powered Sony FX2 is set to combine the comprehensive video capabilities of Sony’s Cinema Line with enhanced still image capturing in a compact, travel-friendly form factor.
"The hybrid cinema camera was created based on user feedback and is engineered with unique features to support filmmaking, a new eyepiece, and enhancements for versatile production needs. The FX2 is intended to continue the Cinema Line’s goal of preserving authentic emotion in every shot and empower creators across all areas of content production." — Theresa Alesso, President, Imaging Products and Solutions Americas, Sony Electronics Inc.
The ideal user of the FX2 is going to be on-the-go filmmakers, as well as your new brand of hybrid content creators. The FX2 notably features an S-Log3 photo mode with optional LUT application and sports a 3.68m-Dot OLED viewfinder that tilts from 0 to 90°.
The Sony FX2 is also being marketed as an AI-powered camera option with an AI processing unit that will help provide active image stabilization and real-time subject recognition, allowing for maximizing the accuracy of auto focus and framing.
DCI 4K Video Recording
Ideally designed for flexibility, Sony reports that this new FX2 will be capable of shooting DCI 4K footage internally with 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling, or output 16-bit raw video via an HDMI connection.
Shooters will be able to capture video in XAVS S, S-I, and HS recording formats in Long GOP, All-Intra, H.264, and H.265 codecs. Color and tone reproduction will be able to be tailored with precision using up to 16 user-imported LUTs or S-Cinematone modes for matching VENICE, FX9, FX6, FX,3, and other camera sources.
The FX2 will also feature an intuitive Variable FPS setting for creating time-lapses and slow-motion video, and can de-squeeze 1.3 and 2.0x anamorphic footage, all in-camera.
AI Subject Recognition
One of the more unique aspects of this FX2 is going to be the camera’s AI processing unit, which is set to deliver multiple improvements in autofocus, auto framing, and stabilization using deep learning.
The Sony FX2 will be able to analyze colors, patterns, and depth. The processor maintains sharp focus with real-time subject recognition, identifying people, animals, and vehicles. Human and animal eye recognition is improved by 30% compared to the FX3 and FX30, making the FX2 ideal for fast-paced shooting scenarios, such as capturing wildlife and sporting events.
This advanced tracking ability should also help allow for precise auto-framing, adjusting the recorded composition to keep a subject center-frame.
