The film industry likes to make money. I mean, who doesn't? But it is always surprising to hear that a twenty-year-old movie is getting a sequel. Did we ask for it? No, but we are not upset by the news either.

Sequels are an inevitable consequence of making a great film. Hollywood, a place notorious for not taking a lot of risks, will greenlight a sequel if the first film was a success. It is a safe option that already has a loyal fan base that will watch no matter what. It's a lot like AI-generated fake film trailers made by filmmakers with aesthetics that are easily identifiable like Wes Anderson.

Sequels allow screenwriters, the original ones from the first film or new screenwriters, a chance to continue a story we love from a new perspective. Writers get a chance to bring new ideas and make big swings to a new chapter. While sequel screenwriting is not always easy, a few screenwriters have shared tips that can help you write a sequel to one of your favorite films of all time and possibly help you break into the industry.

Sequels to Look Out For

There are a lot of movie sequels that have been announced. Some of these films are in the early stages of development, while others have wrapped production or are ready to release sometime in 2023.

There are a few movies on this list that surprised me, like a third Tron movie and Gladiator 2, which is finally being made after Nick Cave's insane script was thrown out of a room. That script can easily be found online, and I recommend reading it to see what not to do when writing a sequel to a massively successful movie.
