The New 'Harry Potter' Trailer Reveals Incredible VFX in the Same Story
You can feel the magic, but don't look for departures from the novel.

'Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone'
When we saw the first teaser for HBO’s upcoming television adaptation, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, it got knocked for being muted and not showing us much.
But this latest trailer is so vibrant and bright; it really captures the magic of the world and showcases some child actors who seem like incredible additions to the Potter lore. There are many laugh-out-loud moments, heart-tugging beats, and the VFX truly blew me away.
The new footage makes one thing crystal clear, though: HBO is playing this straight down the line. From the very first frames, the trailer leans heavily into classic, page-by-page beats that feel ripped straight out of J.K. Rowling’s original novel.
It's the safe and smart play. But if you're a millennial who grew up with both the books and movies, you are not going to be surprised by anything but the casting.
Let's dive in.

A Play-by-Play of Book Accuracy
I love Harry Potter and the world. It was truly magical and a sprawling achievement by JK Rowling. This trailer looks to hit that heart and magic in ways I know my kid will enjoy.
For that, I am grateful and happy to have a show a new generation can embrace.
And yet, there are no left-turn surprises or modern updates to be found here. The teaser guides viewers through the beats every fan knows by heart:
- The Hogwarts Express: We see Hermione barging into the train carriage to deliver her classic, over-eager interrogation about summer reading.
- The Sorting Ceremony: McGonagall calls out the iconic names—Granger, Weasley, and Potter—leading up to Harry’s desperate internal plea under the Sorting Hat: "Not Slytherin... Not Slytherin."
- Classes & Hogwarts Life: Quick cuts show first-year Herbology with Mandrakes in the greenhouses, flying lessons, Quidditch tryouts, and Snape towering over Potions class while chiding Harry.
- The Core Mystery: The trailer directly showcases the alchemical text page for The Philosopher's Stone, the Invisibility Cloak, giant Wizard's Chess pieces, and the looming threat of the troll in the dungeons—culminating in Hermione’s signature deadpan line: "Oh, come on. Don't you two read?"
But I felt like we maybe are missing an opportunity to change or tweak things. Perhaps that will come within the TV show itself.
Or maybe I just need to hope more movies inside the universe get made that can expand on it.
