As we always state with the firmware updates that are inevitably released for pretty much all cameras these days, the best cameras and products from the best companies are never finished projects. You wouldn’t want them to be that way.

In an effort to keep improving the Sony BURANO—which is already proving to be one of the best and most popular cinema cameras on the market—Sony has announced that they’ve developed a new IR cut filter to help improve color reproduction when using the BURANO digital cinema camera under certain, strong lighting conditions.

Let’s take a look at this new filter replacement and how you can get your hands on this update for free, with no charge for parts and labor.

Sony BURANO IR Cut Filter Replacement

Announced by Sony as a free upgrade, this replacement service is open through June 30, 2026, and will be carried out on a first-come, first-served basis. BURANO owners can schedule the filter replacement by contacting their regional Sony service center.

The goal is to help the Sony BURANO perform better under strong lighting conditions, most notably strong direct sunlight, which has proven to be a minor, but not insignificant, complaint about the BURANO and its performance for high-end video production needs.

Sony reports that this infrared cut filter will help to improve color reproduction under these strong lighting conditions, and any current BURANO owner is eligible for this filter replacement. Here are some more details on how to get your replacement today.

Sony also points out that any BURANO units with a protrusion on the upper part of the front optical filter component will already have the new IR Cut filter, and no further filter replacement will be required at this time.

To secure the replacement, for BURANO users based in Europe or the UK, Sony requests email inquiries be sent to Primesupport@sony.com with the subject “Burano IR Cut Filter Exchange”, including the user’s account name and camera serial number. Support is also available by phone at +44 (0) 203 901 5558, Monday through Friday, 9:00–18:00 CET.
