If you’re a Nikon ZR owner or shooter, you’re likely pretty happy with the RED Digital Cinema-infused Nikon cinema camera—especially due to its low price point and high cinematic output quality. However, for more experienced shooters seeking more specific camera control features and remote monitoring capabilities, some improvements are desired.

And while those improvements might come in the future via firmware updates, you can also add many features and functionalities yourself with third-party apps, like this new ZR CTL app, which is becoming quite popular among Nikon ZR shooters.

Let’s look at what the ZR CTL app offers iPhone, iPad, and Android shooters and how it can unlock your Nikon ZR cameras and workflows.

ZR CTL App

Designed to give iPhone, iPad, and Android shooters a fast camera-control surface with a range of live view, exposure tools, LUT previews, tap focus, framing guides, and camera-card playback features, the ZR CTL app is proving to be a popular option for a reason.

For Nikon ZR shooters in particular, this app adds over 23 camera controls, a fully customizable interface, full audio monitoring, and LUT workflows designed specifically for the Nikon ZR and how footage is shot and recorded with the camera.

Some of its best features include improvements to exposure confidence, including signal-aware calibration for Log3G10, N-Log, and SDR monitoring workflows, which should pair well with waveform and histogram scopes tuned for confident exposure decisions.

Improvements for the Nikon ZR

The ZR CTL app also promises to bring new focus tools, including focus peaking for Nikon ZR R3D NE and RAW workflows, which should help keep peaking available for demanding Nikon ZR recording modes, including R3D NE workflows, with adjustable sensitivity, color, and fine calibration controls.

Other improvements and additional features include anamorphic de-squeeze with custom ratios, built-in cinema, vertical, and social ratios, and new abilities to review takes over Wi-Fi without needing to leave the app.

Price and Availability

Still a relatively new app option for Nikon ZR shooters, the ZR CTL app is set to be free to download on iOS and Android. You can find more info on the company’s website here.
