You Won't Believe How Easy it is for AI to Manipulate These Light Sources
More examples of how Runway Aleph can precisely control specific parts of a video are coming out, and they’re pretty mind-boggling to say the least.

The phrase “AI revolution” has been thrown around so much over the past few years that it’s starting to feel repetitive and redundant to say again, but it’s also just not stopping. AI is quickly adding so many new functions and features to all areas of film and video production.
Aleph, Runway’s newest state-of-the-art in-context video model, looks to be the latest game changer, offering a ton of new and underexplored areas for AI to “revolutionize” in front of our eyes.
As always, love it or hate it, these AI technologies are coming out no matter what, and if you’re curious to learn what they’re offering and doing to the industry, here’s what you need to know.
Runway Aleph Precise Controls
As an “in-context” AI video model, Aleph is more than just your run-of-the-mill generative AI model. The in-context part references its ability to take what source material you give it, and then make adjustments or changes that can blend more seamlessly into your current shots or compositions.
The most impressive feature that we’ve seen recently is examples of how Aleph can manipulate ambient, atmosphere, and directional light sources with surprising accuracy. You can see some examples of this below.
What Comes Next?
The big question here for any filmmaker, gaffer, or editor watching these clips is whether or not (or, actually, when) this technology might change how productions shoot, light, and edit their projects. If the ability to change or add lighting is more available later, productions could decide to shoot things as is, then figure out lighting in post-production.
And, again, that’s the fear here too, as this technology could very quickly change how productions are run and what roles are supported for traditional filmmaking workflows. This is incredibly new technology, though, so it might take a bit for it to be honed and find more widespread adoption.
But, as always, AI changes to filmmaking and production are on the way.
