While we’ll have to wait and see what the ultimate effect of tariffs and trade wars might end up being on the film and video industry, for now, the market is flush with great products from a range of awesome companies.

SmallHD, in particular, has been churning out great production monitors and other products that help make production jobs easier and more efficient. With that being said, things can always be better, which is why firmware updates exist.

That’s why it’s cool to see that SmallHD is rolling out a pretty expansive firmware update for the company’s monitor software, PageOS. Let’s look at all of the new improvements and alterations set to be included in PageOS firmware version 6.1.0 and what SmallHD monitors are going to get a boost.


SmallHD PageOS6 Firmware Update

The big news here is simply that new improvements, alterations, and minor bug fixes are on the way. Some notable improvements included simplified customization processes, faster startup speeds, and improved image clarity with color gradients.

The bug fixes of note include issues causing white flashes on startup, occasional navigation issues, and a few other odd issues that have popped up in rare instances. Here’s the full list of improvements and fixes:

Improvements and Alterations:

  • Simplified the customization process of User Function Dials on Quantum 32 monitors
  • Renamed “Backlight” to “Luminance” to more accurately apply to all panel technologies
  • Improved the “Lift” manual adjustments for post-calibration color control
  • Added an explanation to the user after the monitor fails to load a custom No Signal icon
  • Improved image clarity with color gradients
  • Faster startup speed for on-camera monitors

Bugs Fixed:

  • Settled an issue causing a white flash on startup of some monitors
  • Squashed a bug found in the monitor’s Calibration > Manual Adjustment setting
  • Fixed a problem displaying the 0 point of Histogram when displaying full range data
  • Resolved a case where an OLED 22 would not properly power down when the input voltage dropped below the allowable minimum limit
  • Fixed an occasional navigation issue when using Quantum 32 capacitive touch dials
  • Resolved an issue causing a “haloing effect” on some Vision 17 monitors
  • Resolved an issue of minor backlight flickering on some Vision 24 monitors

Important Software Information

SmallHD also outlined a few important notes to keep in mind before looking to download and install any firmware updates.

  • This firmware will NOT support the following monitors:
    • Focus 5 & 7 (LCD, OLED, HDMI, SDI, & RX/TX)
    • 2403 HDR & 2403 HB
    • 1703 HDR & 1703 Studio
    • 1303 Studio
    • 700 Series - 701, 701L, 702 Bright, 702 OLED
    • 500 Series - 501, 502, 502 Bright
  • This firmware is NOT compatible with the DSMC3 RED®Touch, or Action 5
  • RED® Touch users have firmware available on the RED® Touch tab
  • This firmware is NOT compatible with legacy monitors (DP1, DP6, DP4, AC7, and DP7-PRO)
  • If your firmware is below 3.6.5, we recommend the following upgrade path: 3.6.5 -> 4.8.7 -> 5.5.6 -> 6.0.0
