Tom Cruise Filmed A Lightsaber Duel for The New Star Wars Movie
The legend of Tom Cruise keeps getting more and more epic.

'Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation'
There's a lot of buzz surrounding the upcoming Shawn Levy movie, Star Wars: Starfighter. But we really don't know anything about it except that it stars Ryan Gosling....and no, that Tom Cruise was the cinematographer for one epic lightsaber scene.
Yes, you read that correctly. Tom Cruise picked up a camera and went into battle for a moment in Star Wars.
Earlier today, a Variety report (referencing a deep-dive profile by The New York Times) revealed a story that sounds like fan fiction: Tom Cruise visited the set of Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter and ended up operating the camera for a pivotal lightsaber duel for the movie.
Let's dive into this legendary Tom Cruise story.
Tom Cruise: Helicopters and Theme Songs
When Tom Cruise visits your set, he's not exactly sneaking on. For Star Wars, he showed up and caused quite the stir. Apparently, a helicopter landed near the filming location while the crew blasted the Mission: Impossible theme over the loudspeakers.
That's a fun celebration of a guy who has become the living embodiment of theatrical distribution. Apparently, Cruise was in town for other projects and originally just wanted to observe. But if you know anything about Tom Cruise, you know he doesn't just "watch" movies; he lives them.
Picking Up the Camera
When Cruise showed up, the production was in the middle of filming a high-stakes lightsaber duel set in a muddy pond. Levy, probably jokingly, suggested that Cruise jump on one of the cameras.
But you can't joke like that around Tom Cruise.
Instead of laughing it off, Cruise reportedly waded straight into the murky water, ruining his "very nice shoes" to frame the perfect shot.
Pretty epic.
"Now, when you see the movie," Levy told the Times, "you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom. I mean, how cool is that?"
The Ultimate Cinephile
There is no one who represents all of Hollywood better than Tom Cruise. The guy loves movies, filmmaking, and will do anything it takes to make sure what's hitting theaters is good, because it feels like everything depends on it.
Seeing him visit Shawn Levy's set also feels like a strong endorsement that he's doing something right with this Star Wars.
“There is a breed of movie star and filmmaker that makes it a point of pride to spend all the time and all the money,” Levy told The Times. “As if your creative appetite is so voracious that cost and schedule be damned. But I’m the guy the studios call when they want someone they know will take their investment seriously and deliver responsibly. It’s not the sexiest way to put it. But I’m a good worker. And I do take pride in that.”
Summing It All Up
Tom Cruise is famous for his amazing acting and death-defying stunts, but he is also a renowned "student of the craft." Seeing him jump into the mud to help a fellow director capture the magic of Star Wars reminds us why he remains the "last true movie star."
And it makes me excited to view his work.
Star Wars: Starfighter is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. When that lightsaber duel begins, keep a close eye on the camera work.
I bet you won't be disappointed.
