Director Rian Johnson has been tapped once again to create an all-new "Star Wars" trilogy.
Disney has officially announced some pretty exciting news within the Star Wars universe which is sure to get fans excited. Rian Johnson, who was first chosen to direct the latest installment in the series, The Last Jedi, is set to create a brand new Star Wars trilogy alongside longtime collaborator-producer Ram Bergman.
According to the announcement from Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger, the first installment of the trilogy will not only be written and directed by Johnson, but it will depart from the episodic Skywalker saga, with new characters from "a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored" will be introduced.
Lucasfilm and Disney appear to be satisfied with the previous collaboration with Johnson on The Last Jedi. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated:
We all loved working with Rian on 'The Last Jedi.' He's a creative force, and watching him craft 'The Last Jedi' from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
Disney also has plans to release a live-action Star Wars TV series on its streaming service, which is set to launch by the end of 2019 and have a price that is "substantially below" than that of Netflix.
The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15th.
