What 'Avengers: Endgame' Encore Actually Adds to the Original Movie

The energy around Avengers: Doomsday is palpable. Everyone is strapping in and getting ready for Marvel's ultimate multiverse experiment.

But apparently, to really get the movie, you have to watch the new version of Avengers: Endgame, called "Encore."

Now, cynics will tell you it's just a way to add to their massive box office, and they're probably at least a little right. But Marvel and Disney say this version includes additional scenes to contextualize what you see in Endgame.

The gist is that Encore alters the movie's ending and adds three post-credits scenes that set up Avengers: Doomsday.

Encore Has New Tech

Before we get into the story, I thought it was worth mentioning that the Encore also updated some of the tech, so you're watching the best and clearest version of the film to date.

Color saturation and contrast across the final battle sequence at the Avengers Compound have been overhauled.

Theatrical releases feature optimized Dolby audio mixing and brightness targets specifically tailored for Premium Large Format (PLF) screens, including Infinity Vision.

Steve & Peggy’s Interrupted Dance

In the original 2019 version of the film, we have this peaceful ending where Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter share their very long-awaited dance in their home before fading to black. This is after Steven went back in time to return the stone and then stayed there. But in Encore, the scene continues past the kiss...

In Encore, as they dance, there's a sudden knock at the door. Steve cautiously steps out of sight while Peggy opens the door. Standing on the porch is Loki in his TVA uniform, who responds: "I can help you. Both of you." Then, Steve emerges from the shadows to face his former foe before the screen cuts to black.

Three Post-Credits Sequences Revealed

Marvel is famous for its post-credits scenes. And with the Multiverse, you knew a bunch was coming. So stay through the credits of Encore if you want to see...

Scene 1: Doctor Doom "Collects" Bruce Banner

Okay, so after we saw him in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we're back with Banner in this movie. Bruce Banner has locked himself in an underground military bunker miles beneath the Earth to contain the Hulk.

While Banner logs a video update on new Gamma-suppression research, a mysterious green glow fills the room.

A voice in the shadows, which belongs to Doctor Doom, announces, "Mr. Banner. I'm here to collect you."

A Hulk roar echoes as both vanish.

Scene 2: The TVA Observes Multiversal Collapse

Back at the Time Variance Authority, Mobius arrives at work. He walks down the hall and passes a "Loki - Employee of the Month" placard.

Casey and O.B. track an active Incursion between Earth-10005 (the Fox X-Men reality) and Earth-1127, with both worlds launching missiles at each other to survive.

Emergency monitors flash as thousands of additional incursions break out simultaneously, leading O.B. to say, "The Multiverse is collapsing."

Scene 3: Recontextualizing the Hammering Audio

In the original 2019 theatrical release, the end credits featured no visual stinger, just the audio of Tony Stark building the Iron Man suit.

But Encore replaces the black audio screen with a transition that the metallic clanging is actually Doctor Doom forging his metal mask.

Summing It All Up

Avengers: Endgame Encore opens in theaters on September 25th and will be the official lead-in for Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts theatrically on December 18th.

The added scenes give some context, and it may be fun to visit this world before you head to the theater for this epic start of the Doomsday Saga in Marvel.
