Darren Aronofsky Launched a Generative AI Storytelling Venture

Darren Aronofsky is launching "Primordial Soup," a new generative AI storytelling company in collaboration with Google DeepMind.

Aronofsky's venture will utilize Google's new AI tools to produce short films.

Their mission is to establish frameworks for AI's role in filmmaking and ensure artists lead technological innovation.

Aronofsky released a statement saying, “Filmmaking has always been driven by technology. After the Lumiere Brothers and Edison’s ground-breaking invention, filmmakers unleashed the hidden storytelling power of cameras. Later technological breakthroughs — sound, color, VFX — allowed us to tell stories in ways that couldn’t be told before. Today is no different. Now is the moment to explore these new tools and shape them for the future of storytelling."

This announcement coincided with Google's I/O event, where the tech giant also introduced Veo 3, its latest generative video model, and Flow, an advanced new-gen AI editing tool. Google DeepMind will grant the Primordial Soup team early access to these newly unveiled tools.

The first film under the partnership is Eliza McNitt’s Ancestra. It's going to premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 13, followed by a panel with the filmmakers moderated by Aronofsky.

Generative AI is one of those things that I feel like a lot of filmmakers are diving headfirst into in order to figure out how to make things cheaper and to get their own projects greenlit.

Starting with shorts ensures they'll have practice before any larger-scale films dive in. Once perfected, they'll hit the big screen.
