With 4K recording, voice control, and an adaptive design, the Insta360 ONE R is one of the most versatile action cameras on the market. Today, the company has released a firmware update that takes the camera to new heights including improved stabilization, loop recording, and a 4K 50p mode. Let's take a look.

Horizon Lock for 4K Mod and 1-Inch Mod

Horizon leveling is now available for the 4K model and 1-Inch model, making it easier to stabilize action-intense scenes. When activated, horizon lock keeps the footage upright and level when shooting in pro video mode (FlowState Stabilization) at 30fps.

In this mode, there are two options available.

360° Horizon Lock for horizon leveling of full rotations exports a narrow field of view. 45° Horizon Lock is for moderate shakes which exports a wider field of view. Insta360 has said the 45° Horizon Lock is slightly delayed, so look for it in another firmware update.

Loop Recording

New to the ONE R, loop recording allows for continuous video recording, where previously recorded footage is deleted to allow new footage to be captured. With any lens mod, the ONE R can be used as a dashcam with a maximum video length of 30 minutes.

4K 50p Video

Also new to the 4K and 1-inch models is a 4K 50p video option while in pro video mode. Additionally, the vivid color profile on the 1-inch model has received a complete makeover with more vibrant colors straight out of the camera. Plus, Insta360 has added four different in-camera image sharpness options for all of the ONE R models.

Improved Editing

On the app side, they've added new Shot Lab templates.

Horizon Flip automatically mirrors your surroundings in the sky for a futuristic effect, and Overtaker overlays onto the video the number of cars you pass by using a video-game-esque style. Additionally, shooters can apply AquaVision 2.0 to footage, an underwater color correction that makes colors more realistic. AquaVision 2.0 is available for all ONE R mods, including the 360 model.

Car MultiView is another new editing feature that displays a split-screen of the road ahead and the car’s interior. With the ONE R 360 model mounted to the windshield or the dash, the camera captures a complete, wide-angle view in both directions.

Other Updates

Insta360 added several other improvements, including:

  • TimeShift videos are now automatically sped up to 6x before being saved, saving you storage space
  • Audio recorded with external mics with ONE R has been improved
  • A new Roadie Remote accessory is now available, a wireless Bluetooth remote that attaches to the car steering wheel for safe control of the camera while driving

The company also says the ONE X2 will receive the updates for Shot Lab, AquaVision 2.0, and Car MultiView in the future.

The update is free for all ONE R users and is available via the Insta360 app (iOS and Android) and Studio desktop software (Windows and Mac). You can download the latest here
