Chuck Norris Turned the Classic Western Into the Modern Actioner With This One Line from ‘Lone Wolf McQuade’
Amongst his many career accomplishments, Chuck Norris helped single-handedly daisy-chain the classic western genre flick into the ultimate action-cinematic style with this all-time one-liner from Lone Wolf McQuade.

'Lone Wolf McQuade'
As we wrote about when Chuck Norris, very sadly, passed away earlier this year, the actor’s legacy in the action film genre is god-tier. And for good reason: the accomplished martial artists helped define the ultimate action era of the 80s and 90s in their own image, thanks to their genre-crossing martial arts skills, cool, iconic western-style looks, and one-liners.
And no film is more the epitome of Chuck Norris's genre-defining appeal than Lone Wolf McQuade, a film that presents as a Western, fights like a martial arts flick, yet feels like a wholly unique blend of the two that would go on to develop the formula for the Cannon Films era over-the-top actioners of the 80s and 90s.
In Lone Wolf McQuade, Chuck Norris plays a prototype of the character he would go on to play for most of his film and television career as a Texas Ranger who kicks butt and doesn’t answer to anybody. He also delivers one of the greatest lines of his career, and an important one in launching a new era of filmmaking.
Chuck Norris in 'Lone Wolf McQuade'
As mentioned above, this likely won’t be the first or last time that I write about Chuck Norris in Lone Wolf McQuade. It’s one of my favorite films of all time, my favorite Chuck Norris actioner, and an important film in ultimate action movie history.
Released in 1983 and billed as a neo-western before the term had really taken hold, the film, directed by Steve Carver and starring Chuck Norris opposite a post-Kung Fu star-turned-bad guy, David Carradine, Lone Wolf McQuade was surprisingly well-reviewed and a bit of a hit, although not particularly considered a huge success at the time.
However, the film served as a launching pad for Norris thanks to his iconic role and timeless portrayal of a classic Western figure, with the added martial arts prowess. It also helped to fully develop and demonstrate Chuck’s now-iconic look and one-liner abilities.

While there aren’t as many one-liners in 'Lone Wolf McQuade' as you’d think- something which Norris would correct over the rest of his career, becoming one of the best action film quotable characters of the era later on- the film does give us one of the Chucksters’ most iconic lines and an important one for launching this new era of neo-western actioners.
In a conversation with Chuck Norris’s ex-wife Molly in the film, who is amicably separated from his character McQuade (yet clearly still in love with him, of course), Chuck Norris is given a modern setup to which he retorts with a classic western response.
Molly: "I didn't know you took days off."
McQuade: "My kind of trouble doesn't take vacations."
A line that would have been delivered by John Wayne a decade earlier or by Sylvester Stallone a decade later is a perfect example of the Western stoicism-turned-action machismo that would help transfer the same audiences to a new genre.
And, for that, we’re grateful for the performance and always intrigued by how films can be used to develop new genres, tell new tales, and launch careers—as well as build new genres and eras that can become bigger than the actors and performances themselves.
