Kickstarter Finally Ditches Amazon Payments
A two-step payment verification process is so 2014. Finally, Kickstarter has upgraded its payment system, which was archaic when compared to progressive distribution tools like VHX & Gumroad.
Since Amazon discontinued the set of tools that Kickstarter utilized for payments, they've moved to Stripe to process payments. This is going to make Kickstarter even more ubiquitous, with a much more common sense approach to payments. Many project creators can tell you that one difficult element of a successful campaign is getting people to sign on the line that is dotted, often losing backers to a labyrinthian payment process.
For project creators, this means you won’t need to set up an Amazon Payments business account anymore. Instead, you’ll just enter your bank account details on the Account tab when you’re drafting your project on Kickstarter. It takes about two minutes, whereas the old way could take a few days.
Last year we talked to both VHX and Gumroad about streamlining the payment experience online, and the consensus is that a minimalistic transaction process leads to more transactions. Kickstarter's move to Stripe is good for people raising money on these platforms and to help set the standard for others in this space.
Kickstarter's 8-10% fee will remain the same (Kickstarter takes 5%, Stripe's takes 3-5%).
