DJI Warns That “Time is Ticking” Towards Possible Drone Ban in 6 Months
A recent blog post from DJI outlines how the upcoming NDAA deadline in 6 months could decide the fate of a potential drone ban in the United States.

For those who have been following the ongoing story of a potential DJI drone ban (a story that has had many twists and turns over the past several months), we have some new information to share.
DJI has shared a new post on the company’s official blog that outlines how “time is ticking for a DJI audit” and that we’re now just six months out from an NDAA deadline that could ultimately decide the fate of this DJI drone ban.
Let’s explore a bit more about what this NDAA deadline is and what it could mean for the future of DJI’s ability to sell and operate in the United States and abroad.
DJI Drone Ban Update
According to the DJI blog post, on June 6th, the Trump administration issued an executive order aimed at boosting the US drone industry and strengthening the domestic drone supply chain. This new directive could be a positive sign for all companies, DJI reports, yet there are still “key pressing issues that remain unresolved.”
The biggest issue has to do with an overdue security review that could determine whether new DJI products will continue to be accessible in the US market beyond December, which is when this 6-month “time is ticking” number comes from. And it all has to do with an NDAA deadline.

What is this “NDAA Deadline”?
For those who haven’t been following closely, in December of 2024, the United States Congress passed the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (aka the NDAA). This act included a key requirement for a national security agency to conduct a formal assessment of the drones manufactured in China, which would obviously cover the Chinese-based DJI’s drones.
This act was meant to provide an evidence-based process to inform any decisions about potential “drone bans” or anything else that could affect user access to existing drone technologies.
However, DJI reports that more than six months have passed and the process still hasn’t begun, as far as DJI, or anyone else for that matter, seems to be able to tell.

What’s Next?
As DJI has been asking the US government for well over a year now, the company is looking for answers as to what will be their fate. This ongoing saga doesn’t appear to be wrapping up anytime soon, but it does seem to be fine leaving DJI, other Chinese-based companies, and American consumers and drone professionals in limbo.
For now, DJI is asking all of its drone operators, or product fans, to stay patient as well as encouraging them to have their voice heard by supporting the Drone Advocacy Alliance, which you can check out here.
