Well, that was fast—and, without burying the lede here, completely minor but necessary. Less than a month since it was first announced, and around a week since units first hit store shelves, the Fujifilm X-half is getting its first firmware update.

And while this firmware update version 1.01 doesn’t add any major improvements or features, rather than just fixing a couple of likely very minor bugs, it is interesting to see a company so quickly release a firmware update before most potential owners have even gotten their hands on this new camera.

Despite this firmware update, which we’ll explore below, the Fujifilm X-half is looking to be quite promising and likely, quite popular, as this compact, half-frame concept camera is set to offer some rather unique photo and video features.

Let’s look at firmware update version 1.01 for the Fujifilm X-half and explore how you can get the camera up-to-date today.

The Fujifilm X-half camera

Designed as a homage to the half-frame concept found in the film world, the Fujifilm X half features an appropriately sleek 1" sensor, which is uniquely vertically oriented and is capable of producing 18MP 3:4 stills and videos.

This odd, but versatile sensor works alongside the Film Simulation modes to produce filmic and expressive images and benefits from a +/-3 EV exposure compensation dial and manual exposure control settings that are adjustable via the lens's aperture ring and from the rear touchscreen.

As with most Fujifilm cameras these days, the X-half aims to mimic much of the analog film workflow. The X half can be configured to record in Film Camera Mode: a shooting style that requires you to choose one specific Film Simulation setting and a 36, 54, or 72-shot "roll" of film, with the results only visible after you've finished the roll and digitally "developed" your shots using the FUJIFILM app or transferred the files to your computer.

Fujifilm X-half Firmware Update

Set to fix a couple of issues with the “FILM CAMERA MODE” where it would be unintentionally deactivated when the shutter release button was held down for too long, as well as resolve some thumbnail image abnormalities, this update is pretty straightforward.

Here are all of the details about firmware update version 1.01:

  1. “FILM CAMERA MODE” is unintentionally deactivated when the shutter release button is held down fully for about 1 second after “AUTO POWER OFF” is activated with “FILM CAMERA MODE”.
  2. The thumbnail image of the recorded image may become abnormal in rare cases if the “Frame Advance Lever” is operated so quickly after shooting with the “GRAIN EFFECT” setting ON in “FILM CAMERA MODE”.
