As the company’s name might suggest, Industrial Light & Magic does exactly what it promises. It offers industrial lighting and the magic needed to bring projects to life.

Since being founded by George Lucas back in 1975 when he began production on the original Star Wars film, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) has a rich history of bringing visual effects to the biggest and brightest films year after year.

With that legacy in mind, let’s look at some recent examples of what the team at ILM has been able to accomplish with a range of highly ambitious films like Superman, Tron: Ares, and The Running Man.

Behind the Industrial Light & Magic

As mentioned above, ILM was founded by George Lucas back on May 26th, 1975, to help support the visual effects the director needed for the original Star Wars film. Since its auspicious beginning, ILM has become a major company that has won 15 Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and is now part of The Walt Disney Company since it was acquired as part of the Lucasfilm deal in 2012.

Of course, ILM remains as busy as ever these days, helping out with the visual effects for all types of projects, like the few we’ll highlight below, as well as still working on the recent Star Wars projects, such as the 10th anniversary version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Here are some cool behind-the-scenes videos highlighting the work that ILM did for films such as Superman, Tron: Ares, and The Running Man.
