Well, if this turns out to be true, this might be the biggest non-AI news of the year. According to rumors online, Sony is developing a new sensor with some pretty impressive specs and capabilities.

Some of the details are a bit “iffy,” but from the reports, at least one source indicates that this new 67-megapixel full-frame sensor could be released later this year and feature some of the highest video recording specs we’ve ever seen in a Sony sensor or camera.

Here’s what we know so far.

Sony Camera Rumors

With reports coming from Andrea Pizzini and Sony Alpha Rumors, it sounds like there’s good info leaking out about what Sony is working on. As mentioned above, not all the details are set, though the report seems to have some confusion about whether the sensor will be fully or partially stacked.

However, we do get a pretty full slate of specs which fill out almost a complete list of specs and features for this potential new sensor, including info on:

  • Resolution: 67 Megapixels
  • Frame Rate: 60fps readout
  • Pixel Size: 3.6μm
  • Type: 35mm Stacked (partially?)
  • Video: 10k/30p, 8k60p, 4k120p
  • Features: High-Speed AF, Super High-Speed AD, DCG-HDR
  • Interface: SLVS-EC v2.2 8×2
  • Color: Bayer Color (PDAF)
  • Mass Production (MP): Q4 2025

Again, these are all rumors and certainly fall into that “big if true” category, which pops up online fairly often. However, from the sounds of things, even if this rumor isn’t 100% accurate, it’s not likely that Sony is developing new sensors and cameras that might reach these specs one day soon.

Price and Availability

As far as timelines go, all we have to go on is the same report, which indicates that this potential new sensor could be released sometime in 2026. With NAB only a few weeks away, it’s unlikely this would be something on the roadmap to announce there, but you never know.

Whatever the new sensor and roadmap may be, though, we’re excited about the possibilities and would love to see a camera hit that 10K video recording resolution, even if it is just for the unpractical spectacle of it.
