From monitors to focus control systems, is there anything your iPhone can’t be turned into these days? It certainly seems that if you can dream up something for your iPhone to be, someone has figured out a way to turn your smartphone into that thing.

And the latest example of this is the new Lightframer Pro app, which aims to turn your iPhone into a professional cinema viewfinder with real-time sun-tracking capabilities.

Let’s check it out and see what it has to offer with its array of sun-tracking and focus tools.

Lightframer Pro iPhone App

Designed for iPhones and tailored for the working DP on set, the Lightframer Pro app allows users to select from a library of cinema cameras and lenses (including options from ARRI, RED, Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, and more) and then see exactly how these chosen setups can frame their shots right on location.

As far as sun tracking goes, the app can show the sun's path across the sky in real time, even during golden hour, blue hour, sunrise, or sunset, with info overlaid directly on your viewfinder.

The app can also provide overlay frame lines for any aspect ratio, including favorites like 2.39:1 anamorphic, 1.85:1 theatrical, 17:9 DCI, 16:9 HD, 4:3 open gate, or users can also set their own custom ratios.

Overall, this Lightframer Pro app looks quite promising and capable of providing real-time sun tracking, as well as the other features listed below.

  • Real-time AR viewfinder matched to your camera and lens
  • Sun path with golden hour, blue hour, sunrise, and sunset times
  • Compass heading overlay
  • Portrait and landscape modes
  • Frame line shading and color controls
  • Photo export with cinema metadata
